Probably should have specified, with the extended desktop feature, rather than just mirroring

alot of googling is showing up blanks ...

I wonder if you ran the dual display hack (it works great on my iBooks) whether it would recognize this USB dongle as a second screen. That would be a 99US$ solution. I do like the mini's portablility. You could pop this into your laptop bag along with your portable hard drives. Maybe a "mini keyboard" as well? I got a very small sized wireless keyboard a few years ago that is collecting dust. Well, bottom line - I'd rather spend the extra cash and get the real cutting edge - the G5 iMac. Or wait to see what (hopefully) Spring brings with the Powerbook line. (Not that I can afford one of those babies) Then again, first rev G5 pbs may not be so great. Best to play the waiting game for 2nd or 3rd rev product.

sorry Thomase, can you re-send? I am not kidding when I say I am a computer moron. My email goes out sometimes (was out for a long time a few months back) and I don't know how or why.... Everything seems to be ok now, when did you send?

Actually, just resend, ok? No need to add more to this thread

I completely follow you there ...
When I saw the announcement I thought, this is exactly what Emmeline ( 11 yr daughter) would need as a computer : basic officetools, no-hassle setup, browsing, email, virus-free, Ipod (shuffle)/Digi camera connectivity in a snap ...

For all these kinda things you don't even need 1GB ram, 512 or 768 would already been nice ...

Same would apply for my 69 yr old father , who is struggling with his computer eg. now that he has bought himself a digital camera ... appalling ...

Add wifi and wireless keyboard and you have a home entertainment center on a budget when connected to a tv screen ... (for those who don't have a dvd player/stereo installation yet )

And that surely is the market it's aiming at ...

When i was looking if it would cut it for my audio work (I'm using an Ibook 1Ghz that serves me very well so the specs were close to that) ... when adding the costs , I quickly reralised an Imac/PowerMac G5 would be more beneficiary reg. cost/quality/power/... and that probably will apply for videowork as well;

Lightbulb Well, well, well... Lets resurrect this corpse then!!!

Ok, now from a different twisted perspective... Can I???

I?m wondering through what deep ostrich-hole under the ground those major MediaPlayer gadget manufacturers like Archos, DataVision, ?iPods?, etc, will put/hide their head for a while figuring out how to decrease the prices of their Dumb videoclips only players against this Clever full blown tiny box from Apple at $499 for similar & furthermore purposes.

If only to compete against those conventional Portable MMedia Jukeboxes prices, I?d simply rise the humble MiniMac "standard config" price adding one of These kettles? to the basket and still become myself Godzilla MM VJing wise... Hehehe

With no doubt this Apple?s movement will be perceived like an unexpected nasty twister affecting the MMplayers today's marketplace and with some luck we all would be optimistically capable to plug a couple (or bunch?) of these conventional MMP to our usual VJ rig very soon for a fairer & lower price.

? Well if you don?t mind not becoming an entirely Apple branded snob, you may still save some cash & acquire even more powerful alternatives too.

P.S. Yeah, no 2nd video out on Minis sux big way!!!

I bought one. As expected it is not a great choice for VJing, though it certainly can be used fairly acceptably as such.

Its possible to see what all the fuss is about with corevideo and quartz composer using a mac mini, just a lot of the interesting stuff doesnt run fast enough for realtime use.

I would not hesitate to recommend this computer for people who want to try out OS X, see what mac vj software is like, do everyday computing tasks, use it as a media center (though even the faster model will not decode new H264 HD samples from apples website at full framerate, but Im not surprised as they are rather high res).

More from me when Ive learnt how it all works a bit better, got more ram and had a chance to learn some mac VJ programs.

In terms of size and how much noise it makes, it doesnt compare to the shuttle. Its so much smaller that it makes the shuttle look massive in comparison, and for normal nonintensive CPU tasks its almost totally silent (except when you use the cd/dvd drive)
