Hi there,
a lot of times when I work with DJs, there Mixers may display the BPM but do not support MIDI. (BTW: I dont know pretty much about MIDI) Is there a easy/cheap way to grab their audio signal, convert the BPM to a MIDI signal which I can use to control my videos in GRID2 oder VDMXX? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks, Jan |

www.redsound.com I'm talking about the Voyager1 or Microsync.
these would give you a midiclock on a midi cable, you'd need midi-in on your puter. |

THX!
That looks like what I need. Plus a MIDI to USB/Firewire converter. Right? I wish these things already had a USB port. ;-) Regards, Jan BTW: Is there a software solution for this? I do have a MIC input on my PB G4. Hmm... but maybe this software would work together with my VIDVOX software. Anyway? thanks. |

last I heard (you might want to search on the forums..) software solutions to this didn't really work very well. either inacurate or required way too much CPU to work well alongside vj softs.

And I found a nice MIDI-USB box which looks that slick that I want to expose it.

Lev's given you the info - we are waiting for a Microsync to be delivered after being reccomended it by a friend who uses ableton and virtual synths to add fx/vocals/music on top of DJs (they are called Slackers Delight but I doubt you'll have heard of them in Germany) and he says it is spot on pretty much all the time and never far out, so it's really good - the DJs play an eclectic mix of electroclash, house and rock so the bpm shifts more than your average DJ..
get in touch with redsound quickly though.. I don't know if it was just a sales pitch but when we contacted them a few weeks back they said it was discontued but they were doing a small run due to enough people asking about it.. as I say, maybe just a sales pitch. |

yup they are doing a limited rerun if they find enough interested ppl ... I use a Red Sound Voyager (hardly) and its pretty amazing with tight 4/4 beats, but you have to remember any hard/soft solution that is automatic will always be dragging/rushing around the correct tempo, you'll never get a nice steady sync signal like a sequencer or drum machine could provide. Some VJ (and audio) soft might respond strangely to this constant changing of tempo.
Luckily the VJ soft of my choice allows you to just tap the space bar a few times to the beat of the music any time you need to change tempo

There is a great external for Max/MSP by Tristan Jehan called beat~ which does a really good job of figuring out BPM of an audio stream.
It would be pretty easy to write a Max/MSP patch that used beat~ and then translated it to MIDI clock data that could be sent to any software (such as G2) over CoreMIDI. I think the license allows for people to use for personal use, but not to put in commerical software (otherwise we would have immediately added it to our software). http://web.media.mit.edu/~tristan/maxmsp.html Tristan also makes some other very handy MSP objects such as analyzer~ And for reference, GRID2 and VDMX both have tap-tempo for setting the BPM of the masterclock. - David |
