Question Information Transference

Hi All - the more I see the kind of work that VJs are creating, the more I wonder about the possibilities of this form of visual becoming 'applied'. Could these visuals become a non-verbal means of communication?

I think it already is a form of non verbal communication...just like body language, visuals have the ability to create emotion or a message to the viewer. Like most things in life it can be misunderstood but for the most part visuals can communicate a wide variety of things that are understood by most people. For example... a smiley face icon I dunno what exactley do you mean by "applied"?

Yes, I agree completely. Re: applied - I work in a scientific environment, and I suppose what I'm thinking is that there is great potential for VJ-like visuals to communicate complex ideas in public spaces...

I'm not sure about "complex" ideas, but there is a visual moving image language. It's much to complex to write the rules, but great designers, film/video makers, VJ's know how to use it and expand it.

I've heard, but never been able to trace to an actual quote, that the founder of MTV realized this was going on and that inspired the creation of MTV. He realized that a sequence of images could form an impressionistic "poem" of emotional associations. If anyone can trace a reference for this, I'm interested.

I think the language is culture and subculture specific. You need to have ben exposed to the images in the past to have created the emotional association. The time for that is from childhood to teens (when you have a lot of free time...)

I'm interested in imagery presented architecturally myself and am curious what you are thinking.

Default visual languages

yeah, great to read about this

i did quite a bit of research in visual languages and grammars and also people with structuralist point of view know what is it about

if you are interested in semantics of images (what they exactly mean = what describes them) than must start with generative systems like l-systems etc. but you probably end up with what they mean to computer

other end is socio-cultural meaning of symbols, archetypes, primitive languages, all that is hard to exactly describe, network with too many connections

i realize that human psyche functions dealing vith visual communication is imagination and association, wrote some articles about it, but in czech
anyway look for the essays of Vilem Flusser, media-literacy philosopher, i.e. his Communicology book http://www.inout.cz/ang/theory/fiala.htm

and contact me if you want (orx-qx at orx-qx dot net...
