I have one of these, which I route through Ableton Live as a virtual synth. Yes, the commemorative controller does send midi signals out, so you could control any vj soft with assignable midi, although I haven't gone there myself as of yet (too many knobs can become confusing, so I like to keep it direct and simple) - though it does look cool, so maybe I better get the coolness factor in gear and start usin' it for visuals. But, tweaking those little knobby critters does evoke some mighty strange timbres. Korg legacy is a processor hog that eats up my 1 Ghz iBook for lunch. The legacy cell, a combination synth of the polysix and MS 20 maxes out with more than two or three notes polyphony. But, it generates some out of this world sound, even with one or two notes. I know this is audio stuff, but AV people may like to get their hands on this. I use the MDX effects on Big Fish samples and they take on wholly new dimensions in LIVE. This is important, since canned samples are used by everybody. You want to make those samples your own. DJ BUDDHAFUNK told me that my mixes were the most "organic" he'd ever heard, after his Bluenote gig. Definably different. Alive. I can thank the Legacy for that. I have used a wavestation AD (anaogue/digital, that you could route outside analogue source sounds through the WS engine) in gigs with people like DJ Spooky since the early nineties, so I was more than happy to see wavestation included in this package. A much more user friendly interface than the original, and, believe it of not, a cleaner sound. For a new and unique sound that screams, Legacy is da bomb! Now, if I get my hands on that new G5 iMac, I'll have the juice to run Legacy next to Modul8. Then, as I tweak the midi, the sounds will modulate with the visuals Kaosspad Entrancer stylie. I salivate over those, want one, or two, or three - (imagine routing those babies in sequence into each other ENO style?) - but need more $$$ . YeSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!

so yeah, it can... or at least in theory it *should* I'm looking for a (self contained) synth that fully puts out MIDI... I don't want a giant box either... P O R T A B L E. I like the looks of the novation X 25 Remote.. sort of a knob and fader wet dream

Ive got the X-station 25 (previously called Remote 25 audio). They messed around with the names, the one that is called remote now is midi controller, not soundcard/synth.
Anyway the soundcard side of the X-station 25 is pretty good, the keyboard feels very nice, the knobs arent bad, the sliders are a bit small but I suppose it depends what you are controlling. The xy scratch-pad that outputs midi is very nice indeed. The synth itself is not what I would call one of the best, its similar to their software synth the v-station, its ok but theres better. |

well I have the Hercules DJ Console, I'm not 100% behind this hardware due to the fact that it's made for DJs, not for VJs. But it can be make good use of.
http://us.hercules.com/products/showpage.php?p=87&b=0&f=1 It is a little pricey ($250) cuz it has a build in sound card with 6 channel outs, which can be utitized to preview sound in Neuromixer 0.3, like Traktor. The nobs and buttons are positioned nicely, much better than dealing with keyboeards and rows of nobs. The unit itself is kink of small and toy like. I have to point out, all the buttons come in as MIDI channels instead of MIDI notes, which doesn't make sense if you just need to trigger with the buttons. So if you have the $$$ and really want a MIDI controller that's laid out like a DJ mixer, get the DJ Console.
