Default Motorola Live Visuals Award

(responding to this )

First, responding to VJ Fader's suggestion of a split-screen to prove that it was a live feed:

How about an audition? I could easily split-screen myself onto some after-effected footage, big deal.

While I'm glad that something large-scale like this is happening, it does seem a bit strange...and the first prize being a performance with a 'big name DJ'? Erm...I do hope the sponsors are providing all the gear, a crew to do the rigging, and a sizeable fee.

Oh yes, and they can use your entry to promote the contest without giving you a spot of royalties or recognition. And keep your video archived.

Think I'll throw one of these too! Send me a VJ demo and I'll promote it as something I'm doing, and then let you VJ for free at a club night while I rake in the profits!

How about something more positive, like an ongoing venue for VJs to collaborate and progress together, rather than another silly contest trying to pit us against each other?

My opinion is quite different:

first of all, it's most probably only the winners
who will see their visual demo subjected to use for Motorola's promotion
I seriously doubt they will use all the entry footage.

secondly,
the first prize is a live gig opportunity,
which is understandable since this is a "live visuals" award.
if you read on, the firt prize is also a new G4 laptop.
so, not a bad trade off for a 10 minute clip.

thirdly,
it's a classic response, but in this case I think it's quite real:
having your footage as part of a Motorola VJ contest promo reel
is going to be excellent for your promotion and future work opportunities.
this is self evident.

lastly and most importantly,
at last we are seeing a major corporate body
wanting to get involved in our scene,
let's not alienate them from the start.

I know from personal sources
that Motorola are using this event as a testing ground
for seeing how much VJing can be part
of their regular sponsoring outlets.

if this event goes down well,
then more, perharps much more involvement
will come from Motorola into the VJ scene
in the long run, this is a good thing
for VJing's legitmation, promotion and financial security.

The first thing they will look at to assess this I believe,
is the number of VJs participating in this contest.
I heard the number are still quite low,
and this makes me worried...

I think we should all participate to this event
and submit a demo, any demo,
just to send a clear message to Motorola
that we are really enthusiastic at the prospect
of having them as long term patrons.

Oli,

I am confused this seems to be an award for 'newcomers' and newcomers on macs at that. :/

Who/what quailfies for a newcomer?

Are you entering?

I have *could* have no problem in throwing a DVD in for the cause (but I'll be screwed if I am doing to degrade the quailty more by encoding it in a mac best friend Quicktime.)

But what the fuck is all this about. (god I hate pdf sometimes......I have to type this from there)

"
On sending in the clips, the participants transfer all rights in area, time and content to the organiser for further processing and transmission of the contrubtions or excerpts within the framework of the LIVE VISUALS AWARD of Motorola and the publicity for the LIVE VISUALS AWARD in the press, radio, TV and/or Internet and for the presentation on aclub tour to be carried out by the organiser. Furthermor, the organiser is entitled to process, alter and/or abridge the contributions sent in himself or through thrid parties without any approval of the participants being necessary for this........"
etc

Sorry Oli but giving away a laptop (at most) for a TV advertising campaign and using your (and everyone elses stuff) stuff for a visuals on a club night tour is pretty out of order IMHO.

Sound again like preying on the newbies who are naive about the big bad world out there to get a nice freebie. I know what prices are involved for corparate work and put an extra zero on the cost of the prize and you can start talking.

Maybe they have not thougt this award through and I am disappointed in the jury for not advising them.

If anyone from MOtorola wants to comment on this issue feel free I guess they will not and I guess that gives an indication of how serious they are.

(LOL I have not had a rant like that for some time. )

Motorola is the WORST thing that ever happened to Apple. Motorola fell so far behind in development and eventually announced they were only interested in putting G4 chips in cars (since apparently there is less competition there). While other chip manufactureres were releasing chip cycles on the order of .5 Gighertz, Motorola was releasing sporadic chip updates on the order of .15, so we saw pathetic releases of 800, 833, 850, 867.... taking years to break the 1 GH mark while Apple struggled to explain how slow chips don't necessarily mean slow computers.... riiiiight.

As I've stated before, Worldcom was Motorola's attempt to abandon chip manufacturing (something they weren't that good at to begin with) to cash in on the celphone craze and resulted in one of the greatest corporate scandals of the late 1990's, right up there with Enron in screwing investors and "losing" money (billion$ of dollars don't get "lost" in the executives pockets..., it's called stealing).

But the real reason I hope Motorola crashes and burns is they ran a hater advertisement for their text-pagers that was anti-gay and anti-women under the excuse it was "funny". I saw the ad, it was grotesque and was yanked from most markets. This company is the perfect example of corporate stupidity and irresponsibility. They are hurting only because of their own shitty business practices.

I would NEVER support motorola. Until Apple can get rid of the motorola chips in their laptops and replace them with IBM (c'mon! IBM has made only 2 generations of G5s and they already leapfrogged to 2.5GH, Motorola has made G4s for what, 4 years now and they never topped 1.5GH???) I won't be publicly supporting Apple or Apple products for VJing. No way.

If you have ANY reservations against corporations that you wouldn't want to associate your name or your art with, do 5 minutes of research into Motorola/Worldcom and you will be convinced they are the definition of bad news. Sorry, Oli. You know I support corporate recognition of VJing, but some situations are NOT worth selling yourself over.

Ummm come off it rova - this is a very standard licence agreement which is very restrictive in terms of what they can use your footage for - the key words here are "within the framework of the LIVE VISUALS AWARD of Motorola and the publicity for the LIVE VISUALS AWARD" - ie they will only use your clips to promote the contest that you have entered.

i don't really see what your problem with this is?

That can mean allsorts though sleepy in the 'framework'.

I am just making people aware of what they are 'entering' into.

I still am unclear as to who this is aimed at.

in a professional context,
not just for VJs,

anybody that isn't making a living out of a specific activity
can be considered a newcomer, or in other words, unsigned.
for VJs, that pretty much means everyone except Kriel, Coldcut and Hexstatic...

Still think it is a cheap TV advert mind you. If they want to fleece you they can do. I think I will give it a miss.
