I am a graphic designer and am pretty used to using flash and after effects to create motion graphics and have wanted to get into VJing for a while now but can't seem to find any good bits of software for the mac. Any advice on the best bits of software around would be much appreciated.

What Mac model will you be using for your VJ soft? Regardless of that, I would highly recommend Isadora. It is the best VJ app available for the Mac. It is more compositional than your normal drop n' play VJ app. You can create custom interfaces with it too. Isadora is the ONLY Mac app that supports Freeframe (Pete Warden has some ) . Isadora uses Quicktime, thus Flash 5 files will work fine.

and for good image quality and ease of use check out Modul8
www.garagecube.com I used Isadora put on my Powerbook G4 667 with 768mb ram it's not going fast enough with a comparable set-up as with Modul8 that program just flyes on my set-up. Modul8 is supposed to get freeframe support according to their developers. |

Modile8 is by far the best video output I have tried on a mac. Right now I am running it on a 1gHz PB with unbelievable smoothness and accuracy of MIDI. Too bad it cost so damn much
Though I'd say it's worth at least $200USD. It is all about using the GPU and it uses the full 64megs that are available to my system. Love it!! I'm talking about scaling 8 layers , opacity control over all, plus a number of other parameters without framedrops!

Thanks for the tips.
Having searched through the software review on vjcentral I discovered vdmx which seems to do everything I had imagined possible but I will check out the above suggestions. Cheers. |
