Default windows xp for vj system?

Hello all,

Its not that I want to do it. Im perfectly happy with win2k. But the Korg microKontrol connects via USB only when XP is installed. So, i am considering it.

Anyone out there using windowsxp pro as a vj system? Is it OK? Particular problems you have had? Any special tweaks to the system that should be made?
In particular, anyone running it with resolume?

Thanks much for all input,
topherZ

We use XP with resolume.

We've had no problems with it. It's the same codebase as windows 2000, so you should be fine with it.

You should go through the vanilla install and strip out all the services and devices that you don't need - there is an awful lot of stuff that isn't required for a VJ machine.

Dan.

its just annoying that they put so much crap in xpee - you can get it to be a reasnobly stabl;e fast os but it takes a week of faffing about compared to a day with win2k

if your on a desktop then i'd stick with 2k and get a normal soundcard midi addapter (the type that goes on the gameport) - if its a lappy and you don't have a midi interface for it then go for xpee (assuming you have allready perchased a copy of xp - if not a roland um1 or a midisport usb midi addapter will be cheaper solution than buying a new OS)

No matters using XP!
It' s a very versatile platform, I use XP pro for 3D, video post-prod, mixing sounds and realtime shows. Midi really works well on and most of best softwares are developped for.
So go on, you won't regret it.

Out of interest Tom, what tweaks take so long with XP? I admit to not having read a XP tweaking guide cover to cover, but really the only major additional steps I found I needed were to turn off windows update, system restore, a few of the fancy appearance options and a few services, it didnt take much longer than 2K.

As for performance/power, after tweaking it does feel about the same to me as win2k, though Im sure a few things feel faster (the UI and explorer in general). Doesnt really make any difference in terms of vj output framerate etc though, just in general computer responsiveness.

its probably just my lack of familuraity with it that causes the delay....

somethings are properly anoying though - like the fucking auto play that pops up when you insert a removable drive - it takes a lot of pissing around to remove it fully, powertoys helps a lot - and gives you the ability to add entertining options to the autoplay menu

Default XP for vj use

i wouldn't recomend anything but XP for use as a VJ machine.

I have been using the same install of XP for nearly 3 years now, installing and uninstalling god knows how many different apps.
everything still works fine and fast.

for tweaks i would suggest you use a program called X-teq setup
it is by far the best xp tweaking tool i have found so far, plenty of useful options
