it could be worth having a look through here http://www.softwarevj.com/
it doesnt give a free / paid option in the search engine, but is a pretty good and comprehensive list of whats out there - some of which is free and some isnt. |

VPT (videoprojectiontools) is usable for 3d mapping, and the flxer video mixer is also free and good for basic vjing. VVVV or quartz composer are also free, but require a lot more skill.
But if you want to be a serious VJ, you'll need an expensive program (never say never, but most vjs use resolume, modul8, vdmx or grandvj). You need also a free program for content creation, I don't know an alternative for after effects but blender is usable for 3d content. MPEG streamclip is a very good freeware video converter. You also need hardware, but that doesn't has to be expensive. A korg nanokontrol/nanopad is enough and is quite cheap. Good luck! |

vvvv is not free - if you use it commercially then you have to buy it.
you can however use it freely for non-commercial projects. It's similar to visualjockey, more powerful but also more complex and harder to get into. It's possibly the only free option on windows with ongoing development and an active userbase. otherwise you'll have to resort to abandonware such as... http://neonv2.com/ is worth a look http://aestesis.eu/elektronika/ is also a nice software from back in the day.

FFRend is a free option for Windows, with ongoing development, and users. Not sure how active the users are, but they should probably spend less time sitting in front of their computers.
![]() http://ffrend.sourceforge.net/ "FFRend (Freeframe Renderer) is a free, open-source renderer for Freeframe V1 plugins. It allows you to chain any number of plugins together in any type of routing, automate their parameters using oscillators, and display the output full-screen and/or record it to a file. FFRend has a modular interface, includes MIDI and dual-monitor support, supports plugin authoring via metaplugins, and leverages multicore CPUs by running each plugin in its own thread." |
