Hi everyone,
Does anyone know if the P-10 will continue to let the pads transmit Program Change MIDI messages through the MIDI Out port while the P-10 is in "External Source" mode (with the external feed showing on the preview monitor), yet Still / Movie Capture has NOT been activated? |

Galen Trafford from Roland Canada (Toronto) provided me excellent answers to these Qs over e-mail today. Here is a synopsis:
1) You cannot view the external software feed in P-10 EXTERNAL SOURCE mode and press a Pad for a MIDI message, unless you are recording the feed to a sample Pad position (recording time limited to 30 minutes per sample on P-10). 2) You can only work with the current bank of Pads while actively recording an EXTERNAL SOURCE sample to a Pad. (I'm also glad to learn of this limitation while using my regular 2 x P-10 setup.) 3) Without this previewing EXTERNAL SOURCE requirement, the Pads can send MIDI Note messages to trigger clip banks within computer-based MIDI-receivable VJ software. You can send up to 72 different note messages across Pads for a total of 72 clips in the sample library back at the VJ soft. As a result of these notes, I won't be working in HD until the P-10HD is released!

I am sure we have explained to you before you are working with what is basically now or soon will be obsolete/retro kit being limited to SD resolution.

PCProject,
I always knew it was SD-only. Considering it's part of the best-in-class visual control interface (none of the other MIDI controllers, including the APC40, is as nice a pad-triggering system and clip library access tool as the P-10, IMHO, for stage work), I wasn't concerned about it. I was just brainstorming potential options for switching to software in the future while maintaining the beautiful Edirol P-10 / V-x control system. Considering a HD install is still too expensive for the average event promoter (if you want to actually get paid to VJ a show, because gear infrastructure rental is coming right out of the VJ's check) in Canada, I'm not at all concerned about not being able to HD live right now. Most of my content is sampled from obscure SD sources anyways. |

sleepytom,
The Trigger Finger is missing all the clip library access features I use on the P-10, like its 12 x 6 x 12 Bank system. If it's there, it's certainly not as easy to use or as robust as a P-10. |

Sorry to de-rail this thread, but how's the P-10 as a straight-up AV video sampler? I remember reading when it came out it had latency issues...where these fixed?
I'm wondering how this compares to Vjamm... Cheers, Robotkid

Edirol / Roland released a firmware update you can DL from the P-10 official product page. It addresses the large majority of those previous latency issues.
