Default working 2gether with a Dj?!

I want to talk about working with these guyz, who make the music while u perfome ure video stuff.
i am a dj and i played a lot with Vj protobeamaz last months and at the camp 03 in berlin with some more of ur?s.
i think it is important to have for minimum of good understanding a little meeting before playing.
yes some of ur?s got his own audio stuff for shure, i respect that, but mostly, if u play - u play in club with a dj ore a live set, right?
and i just want to say that would be pretty proffessional if djs and vjs have meetings before play?n or share some stuff before or just comminikate somehow.-.

Hi Mo,

Thanks for putting out a hello from the DJ-end of things. Just so you know, I deleted the duplicate post in "Just Starting" so everyone could reply in one place, ok?

Getting together a team of DJs and VJs is always a good thing!

Welcome!

What are some of the subjects you'd bring up with the VJ's if you had the chance to sit down with them?

?

Most VJ's would like to (and do) talk to the DJ's before the sets. We all agree that this is can be benifical.

IMHO it is teh DJ's that are not interested. Most (well some esp the big names) see themselves as the main draw and that the silly VJ does not matter.

Why do you think that VJ's do not do this?

Has you're experience been that the VJ's do not care.

How many VJ's have you approach and they are not interested in what you (the DJ) is playing. I am not saying the DJ should tell/advise the VJ what to play...I mean imagine if the VJ's went around doing that. 'Paul VAn Dyk can you play a more hip hop set tonight I have loads of good footage to that'.

It is generally not the VJ's with the ego.

I believe that if this a problem then it is more of a DJ problem than a VJ one. They are the ones that have to change if anyone.

Discuss.

I never had a problem with a DJ and my visual work, un less the DJ is the promoter of the party and they get envy about the $$$ we ask.

But in my case, I know a few DJs athat are turning in to VJing too... actually yesterday I had a "terapy" witha friedn of mine that got so frustarted because a group of guys that we know wanted to pay him $20 the entire night. He was very upset because he got his new Powerbook 800 15" (Just like Hollys) and they do not want to pay him more.

So, DJs like the visual stuff too, specially when you have your video camera pointing them, you have to play a bit with their ego too.

But I see a good relationship, nothing to be worried about.

at first, thanks for delete my speach in the technic corner - i am very new in here -
most of the atrtist are interested to talk before playin, but i thing the guys who invite u to play in club shut care for a meeting betwen dj?s and the vj?s, maybe to have a session before or stuff like that.

for example if a vj?s play clips with a deeper meening(story telling) - the music can destroy the story and otherwise the vjs
can change the feeling of the music to.

and its very important too, to care for an audio output signal for the vj?s to synchronise his video stuff sometimes the clubtechnicans dont realize that.

Well, contrary to what Rova says I try to tell the dj what to play all the time! Ha ha ha ha. Just kidding.

But what I hate is that I am usually no where near the DJ just for cable/technical issues. Often he cannot see the screens because the way the DJ booth is designed. Talking before is good, but I would be willing to work together more if there was someway he could go (via walkie-talkie?) "Hey I'm throwing down Carmina Burana next, ok?" Like, a lot of the time I'm trying to follow where he's going but there's no way for me to know when he's going to break or build. Aside from the happy accidents (I went into a shot of a nude guy just when he went to "Sexy Boy" which was great but totally coincidental), I think we should be communicating from minute to minute.

yeah, ure right. the artists need to be in a close place, because they have to communicate all the time - if they want to play together. its also much easer to put a camera on the dj :-)

what about choosing the right dj for the right vj ? or otherwise - there are some vj?s or dj?s with very synthetic stuff and also some with very organic stuff.

me again: answer 4 rova
yes i agree with u - lot of dj?s are a little hard to talk with(asholes) or dont have time to go in contact with another artist who is playin at the same place and the same time. and thats bad.

i am shure that most of the vj?s take care about the music and try to visulize it very goood.

me just trying to find good conzepts to fix that problem.

That is ok I was a little confused as I thought you were saying your experiences with VJ's wasn't good as they didn't want to talk to you.
