OK, excuse the ignorance of a newbie here.
I have only just discovered the 'magic' of VJ ing but would like to get seriousley into it, get some live bookings etc... so can any of you guys help me out here with my query. What I seek is a simple answer to a simple question - MAC or PC laptop? At the moment I'm just 'playing around' with FUSE and Motiion Dive 3 demo on a desktop Mac G3 but have no aversion to PC's if their laptops are better (are they?) I was going down the PowerBook G4 road but then read somewhere of overheating problems when giging in hot clubs, could anyone throw any light on this. Please can you bare in mind that I'm not too technically minded (I just love mixing videos). Thanks in advance Steve |

I wonder what the overheating is about. I use a Powebook G4 667 and if I do a gig without someone else I only use the powerbook with R.C.Fuse. And yes it gets warm but it just keeps playing along fine even after 8 hours non-stop mixing in a room of 30 degrees Celsius and warmer. I heard a lot of complainig about these getting hot but that's normal in my opinion if you abuse a laptop for 8 hours non-stop mixing. I use an external hard-disk so maybe this influences it a bit (you really should get a fast external HD anyway to run everything as good as possible). So overheating no problems, is it getting warm "definetly".

Every time you hear some one talking about heat problems in a PB just hit him on the head and remind him we are in the 2000s not in the 80's. A lot of people do that to call the attention, computers get hot, so what? Use your common sense too, clubs are hot but they are not on fire.
Macs are the most reliable computers out there, you are paying for something that is gonna last you 3 years for sure if not more. PCs... depends on the brand. What I know is that I'm doing visuals with a Powerbook G3 and 8MB of video ram with motion dive and arkaos, try to find a PC runing visuals with 8MB of Vram. That is gonna asure you that if you get a Powerbook with 32MB of Vram is gonna last you for years. Do not get iBooks, it is not the same performance.

umm
we used to run VJamm classic on a pc with 2meg of graphics ram - motion dive, arkaos visualjockey, resolume etc etc are all ok running on 8 meg or less of graphics ram om so most PCs have 32meg or more graphics ram but most vj software takes no advantage from large graphics memory - the exception being programs that work in 3d or that are bassed on 3d tech like opengl

There is no simple answer- I think you probably get better value for money from pcs, and there is certainly more choice as far as programs go ....... but I wouldn't swap my powerbook for anything

re your mac / pc question - i'd stick with a mac if its what you know best - theres good software for the mac and you'll have less grief swaping files from your g3 to a mac lappy than a pc (quicktime on the pc is no good for vjing) if in a years time you feel you made the wrong choice you'll be able to sell a mac laptop for much more money than a pc as macs hold there value in a way that pcs just don't
