We (Syzygy) do midi controlled video performances for all sorts of music events - mainly nightclubs but also including sporting events, festivals etc. Dan.

I'm originally from Texas but I avoid it like Thelma and Louise.... Actually, now that oral sex has been decriminalized I don't have as strong an excuse to not return....
I have a theater company in NYC. We combine different performance disciplines with media and technology. Currently we've been hosting some free parties that are VJ focused to kind of get the ball rolling on the scene in an organized way and our goal is to generate publicity and awareness of live-mix video as an artform. I've been using video in our shows for years, but the performing arts scene is a little slow on the uptake (it's often used badly) so we decided to focus on getting VJ artists together and performing like rockbands, with a headline act (or two) and several supporting acts each night. Now we are about to release our first DVD out of the connections with artists (audio and video) that we made there. There are other A/V scenes in NYC (mostly experimental), but none that focused on the VJ as indipendent solo performer. For me personally, I am a video artist and hack dvd author. I work mostly in AfterEffects with bluescreen camera footage. I don't seek out a lot of club gigs but I do my share ? I'm not a trance or rave groupie so I'm not hugely big on AVS or "VJ as suppliment to DJ". I feel like my work is strong enough (and conceptual enough) to hold it's own irregardless of music style. I'm looking more towards gallery work and dvds for my future in visuals, but I enjoy the live aspect because it keeps it fresh and spontainious. I've met a great group of people here at VJf. I'm proud we created a small regular venue in NYC for VJs to get together. I think we took a small step towards being recognized for what we do, but have really only scratched the surface.... Everyone has different ideas of where this comes from and where it's going, so I feel lucky to have met such a wide variety of artists, performers, and technicians for the short time we are converging in the same scene. Welcome aboard, and please don't take my anti-Texas jokes too personally. |
