Im just downloading it now. Ive heard the final will be out later this month and will cost $299. I am not surprised that it isnt cheaper, unfortunately.
Ive yet to work out if I really need this, I suspect that it will seem worth it if lots of people make interesting things with it. If I find time to do much with it then my first mission will probably be to see if I can build an attractive visualisation of whats happening in live using quartz composer, receiving osc via mac for live. I guess I will go and read the documentation to see if live exposes many interesting things to max. |

Can you use plugs created with it even if you don't own it?

Well its out proper now and is for sale at a price that will put some off for sure.
I got it because I like midi effects a lot, have been meaning to try max for years, and want to hook ableton up to visual software in different ways, eg osc. Once I've understood someones matrix sequencer built in max for live I want to visualise its grid in new ways. I also quite fancy hooking it up to Unity3D and using the physics engine in unity to do something to the notes. If this thread to date is anything to go by then Im not going to get too much of a conversation going about this stuff here, but I will post if I achieve something of any interest. |

so the six million dollar question is:
is there visual support within Max for Live, or do you have to connect it to an external app? ![]() It's expensive, but I guess I will get it when I upgrade from APC40 edition to full mega edition (hope that's possible) argh... these lovely software tools can really break the bank |

Well there is Jitter in max4live which does images. There is a limitation with max4live vs full max, namely 'restrictions on seeing Jitter images in the Max application (Jitter is fully functional inside Live)'. I am not too interested in Jitter so I havent explored how much of a pain such limitations are.
Really the devil is in the detail, you can do visuals but you or someone else will have to make patches with max & jitter to define the visuals. If you already have a visual app you like, it might be better to just figure out how to wire it up to ableton via midi or osc, it depends what you are trying to achieve. |

For example here is a fairly simple quicktime video player someone has made with max4live:

I'm getting all JITTERY thinking about the possibilities ;-)

Do you mean that all output of Max4Live must come THROUGH Live's outputs? |
