Default Isn't it annoying

When you spend money on an expensive piece of gear and it comes with quite an important item as a seperate order. I'm still waiting for my Sony HDV/DV to iLink cable...hopefully it will arrive this morning. For the £10 the lead costs you'd think they'd place it with the others you get with the camera even if they had to raise the price to cover it. Why do manufacturers to this at times. Toys should allways come with batteries too......I have grumpy old man syndrome today

http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/search/br...ire+cable&Ntx= firewire cables are not exactlly a special order item...

you can probably even walk into a shop in your town and buy one over the counter. I'd guess that most vjs already own several of them as they are supplied with hardrives and the like.

the sony is not a slightly different size - the firewire (i-link) output on the z1 is a standard 4 pin firewire connector. I've brought firewire cables in Lewes before (dixons - expensive but local) so even if the streets are paved with mud you should be able to get one. What you cannot get in local shops is proper advice on things... "ohh sony is it, yeah mate they are different you see, you can't just use the normal (cheap) firewire lead you have to have this one that costs £20" - bollocks of course but they will try it on (and quite possibly actually believe it themselves)

the one cable you don't want to lose which IS supplied with the z1 is the component output cable - sony will try and charge you £80 for a replacement (piss taking bastards)

also try not to hot plug the firewire cable with the computer and camera turned on - you can zap the firewire port which will at best prevent it from connecting to a computer ever again and at worst fry the whole camera AND the port on the computer!

Well I tried 2 which failed, Currys, PC World, 3 local camera shops, Maplins...Leeds, York and Teeside Park at Middlesborough. I recieved the same advice in all. Keep in mind I couldn't even get to see a Z1 up here never mind get a demo. Try country life....although peaceful it does have it's down side. I'll go and try the ones I have again. I'll also pass this on to Sony

It's the grown up version of getting a remote control car at Christmas with batteries not included.

Basically they don't want you to be happy.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sony redesigned the firewire port for Sony cameras to make it different to everyone else's. Part of the Sony strategy is to draw you into a buying chain of Sony gadgets.

I would be surprised if Sony did that. And Id be amazed if Curry's and PC World didnt have standard firewire cables. So this thread confuses me. I found a few threads on the net where people were moaning that long firewire cables werent working well with their Z1, which leads me to believe it does use standard cables.

Anyways, did your cable turn up?
