I have some clips that don't play back smoothly in resolume, I know there are suggestions regarding compression etc, just wondering what is the best sort of compression I should be using? Also, how do I find out what type fo compression the files currently have? Is it better to create big huge uncompressed AVI files using VirtualDub?
thanks for the help. |

maybe use one of the codecs suggested in the manual?
the section " Preparing media " is the one you want. or if french is your first language ( i see your in canada so this is possible ) then read the section called "Préparation des médias" in the french language version of the manual. unless you have a hi-spec machine, using big uncompressed files is not a good option. clips which dont play back smoothly are usualy down to the compression used for that clip being unsuitable for resolume,. |

it could be my screen resolution too. the thing is, I just ripped these avi's from a DVD, so shouldn't they be in MJPEG format already? According to the manual, it looks like I need to install Adobe Premiere.

sounds like your confusing MPEG-2 and MJPEG here.... MJPEG-2 is whats found on DVD's.

the pictvideo codec will improve your playback rate for MJPG files.
I've seen 3 layers go from 21fps to 50 fps. |

how do I get the pictvideo codec? i also seem to have problems running more than 2 layers simultaneously without it slowing down, but I thought it was my laptop (AMD Turion 1.6 Gz, nVidia 6150 video card).
btw, regarding VirtualDub, I always wondered where it gets all its compression formats from, i remember my old PC had a whole wack to choose from, but since I reinstalled my OS, i lost a bunch. thanks for help! |

Yea you are confusing MPEG With MJPG (motion jpeg)
I had to buy an mjpeg codec from pegasus i think it was... about $30 USD if I remember correctly. But honestly, I use Indeo 5.11. It's free and works just as good (it would be the "other" prefered resolume codec) Clip resolution is a factor too.... 400x300 works flawless on my no frills 1.5 ghz 512meg lappy. 640x480 is doable too... but has a bit more overhead for sure. Get freeware app Gspot to determin the codec that your existing clips are rendered into if there is any question. Gspot will also tell you what codecs are installed on your machine and whether the codec a clip is encoded with is installed on your machine. As far as "compression formats", meaning the different codecs... you have to install many... though windoze comes with some... media player installs some... as does quicktime and nero. www.free-codecs.com (dont forget the dash) has all these mentioned apps and codecs for you. PS for reencoding MPEGs Or VOBs, make sure you get Virtual Dubs MPEG2 version |
