Default variable ND filter

checkout the variable ND filter .. supposedly no loss of image quality at all.

rotate the filter to go all the way from 2 stops of light loss all the way to 8 stops darker.

The design of the website looks so...outdated.
But anyways the filter looks nice.

$390 is a steep price for a nd filter also no 58MM - still looks useful.

yeah a matte box and ND filter set would make more sense for most uses - unless you really think you'll need to radically change ND in-shot??

variable nd filter on a canon L series FD prime lens, 85mm f1.2 = narrow depth of field and pleasant bokeh.

to gain the benefit of the fast 1.2 aperture's resulting narrow depth of field, the light input must be stopped down.

the variable ND along with the variable aperture of a canon prime lense, 85mm 1.2, is a very favourable position to be in, as regards trying to film with optical bokeh.

therefore, seeing as how the light filtration is integral to a 35mm adapter system actualy working at an optimal level, the variND is a good thing.

or you could buy two slim polarizers and stack them, which i figure is exactly what this thing is.
the question that remains is if this filter maybe messes with your autofocus. if they used linear polarizers, that's a definite possibility...

here is a webpage where the vari ND receives very glowing reviews

the issue of focus is explained.

however, the idea is this: use it with a manual focus canon prime lens.

put the lens on a brevis35 adapter and connect that to the ex1

for example..

the idea is for filmic footage with lovely bokeh in the hazy backgrounds.. to be utilised in content creation at previewlounge studios.

a matte box is more economical and can be used to add additional filters of any type including ND.

when filming normally, without any adapters or matte boxes, and just working with the ND filters on the EX1, i find that the first ND does a slight amount, and then the second one is too much. that is my concern about using static optical filters, even though they are good and professionals know how to use them properly, i need to have quicker and more responsive light stoppage options. this is because i wish to widen the iris aperture to allow lots of light in, and not over-expose it either, to attain a narrow field that is in sharp focus, with everything else a blur.

of course, a matte box would be great as part of a film rig, and also a "Follow Focus". Cinevate offers a reasonable matte box to go with the Brevis35, and they are also working on a Follow Focus auto gear/rotary controller. to remain within the studio investment budget, i will not purchase these now, although i would consider at least a lens hood for the canon FD prime 85mm f1.2 lens.
