Do you get insulted when some huge DJ like Paul Van Dyke hands you a dvd containing a 60 second loop to play for the entire night? While Paul's was well produced, 90% of the big name DJ's have horrible visual DVD's.

It's certainly not an insult, they've at times not seen the VJ's work and are ensuring at least some of the content going on screen will be in the style of their branding. I've accompanied PVD several times and his DVD was certaily a lot longer than 60 sec, in fact he probably had several 20-30 mixes. He and his management/engineer have no objection to you mixing with this content as long as they are happy with yours and it fits in with their style. This goes with all the DJ I've worked with, none have ever stipulated that their disc was the only content to be played. I've come accross 2 DJ's who's discs were I'd say without being big headed have been below the standard of my own content, but at the end of the day you've got to remember that those DJ's have recieved content to the value that they have been prepared to pay....some recieving for free no doubt. I enjoy getting discs from DJ's at times, it forces you to go in other directions that perhaps you wouldn't try.

going back to the thread, I remember some addict giving me two dvds of utter rubbish, one of which was PAL 16:9 the other NTSC 4:3 and then repeat 4 lines of marketing speak along the lines of " these images are essential to the core identity of the ( .....insert DJ name here) brand and must be played etc etc" before lapsing back into a trance.
I think he was famous, but then all DJs are aren't they? Last edited by deepvisual; 19th April 2008 at 10:42 AM. |

when a dj comes up to me with a dvd and asks me to play it, my answer is:
'sure, that would be fun. btw, i brought some cd's with me, could you play those in your set?' |
