Anyhoo, I use Modul8 or the following reasons: MIDI controllable Module add-ons Modular interface to customise workspace 10 'layers' of playing clips which can all be active Freeframe and Core Image fx Compatibe with .psd files Realtime 3D effects Object mapping Masks (to project onto custom shape screens) Canvas (lets you draw/paint on top of the output using the mouse or a graphic tablet) Logical record (records what your press, then you can render it later and export as a mov to save laptop power!) Live FW/USB cam input Free updates User Forum .......the list goes on! At the time of choosing, VDMX was being developed and I didn't like the interface of Grid Pro. I did a comparative test using the demo's of Grid Pro, Livid Union and Modul8 and Modul8 outperformed them both against my selection criteria. For creation I use : MPEG Streamclip for VOB extraction. iPhoto and automator to adjust photo parameters. Quicktime Pro for simple quick tasks. iMovie 05 for capturing DV and quick cutting. FCP for further editing and adjustment. Motion 1.0 for all motion gfx. Compressor for batch exporting/conversion Last edited by Liquidmetro; 4th March 2008 at 11:05 AM. |

i use modul8, basically cos its what i learnt when i was a beginner (many thanks to hookturn aka durtymac)
i use After Effects mainly for content creation, but also starting to use a bit of 3D from lightwave. ive had a play around on Arkaos but didnt enjoy it as much as Modul8, but now that i have a lot more loops to play with i wouldnt mind having another play with arkaos. |

Well, I've been using Grid pro on my Macbook, but I find it's got limitations, and it runs a bit slowly. Although I could start using the upgrade, which is VDMX, I'm a bit put off as I've heard it's quite difficult to learn, and I'm too lazy!! I want something I can learn quickly
![]() So, I'm reckoning it's either gonna be Modul8 or the new Resolume Avenue, which is compatible with mac's. I have seen Avenue in action on a PC, and I loved the interface and massive range of Fx it can do with movie clips. My friend who uses PC's says it's very stable, but I wonder if that's also true of the mac version? I've checked your software comparison site, but it's not up there yet...(great site by the way-very useful!) So, if any mac users have tried Avenue for a while, please let me know if it works ok cheers, MM

I use modul8 for live, and modul8 for content creation.
Modul8 was the one I started with, and it was the most intuitive of all the apps for me. It has a real good balance between complexity and intuitive interface. Same reason I use motion. I have tried both after effects and motion, and motion let me design more, while in after effects I spent more time programming and tweaking. I have been tempted to play around with some of the more modular ones though for realtime generated clips, but if I go that route I might use max/jitter or Quartz Composer.
