free vdmx demo - http://www.garagecube.com/modul8/

quartz composer is a visualisation application that comes free with macs.

also check out vvvv or max/msp which are free graphical programming applications for creating visuals.

?400 is not equivilent to 'free' and Max/Msp is not really just for creating visuals, and in fact really needs the Jiter extension to be of much use to create visuals.

Does VVVV work on Osx or is it windows only?

I think they are useful suggestions for a poor student wanting to experiment with visuals using an intel mac.

In what way is suggesting one bit of software that costs ?400 and another that doesn't run on OSX useful for a poor student using an intel mac?

yep, vvvv is free, but it is windows only and max/msp with jitter is not in any way freeware.

7 posts and only one free app for osx suggested...

why do people bother?

Mac Software which really is free (not trial versions of expensive apps)
http://www.neuromixer.com/products.php has some free stuff that works in osx
http://www.gephex.org/ - opensource crossplatform VJ app
http://goldbergs.com/dervish/
http://www.flxer.net/software/
quartz composer can be used to make interactive visuals - it's included in the dev tools on the osx install disk and is a better option for node based programing than max/msp

http://www.gephex.org (runs under windows, macos and linux)
http://www.veejayhq.net (runs only under linux, but your mac can run linux)

They are both free and open source.

if you ignore the other applications I mentioned ok.

You can run windows on a mac , (like you don't know) so technically you could use vvvv.

Iwas only trying to suggest some apps that would be interesting to try out, I guess its down to video.ghost what they find useful.
