I finally managed to get VIDNET working yesterday (over 1gig ethernet).
Turned out my previous problem was NIS (norton internet security), which despite being "disabled" was still blocking packets. Also, I changed the "provider order" of my network stacks so that my 1gig network card was at the top, result, less lag / delay between resolumes. Sticks |

mate, i would seriously consider having a dual boot OS.
Fisrt OS is for normal use and the second for VJ use with minimal software installed i.e: Windows, Drivers, Resolume, codecs. It makes for smoother running and minimises problems. |

one day I'll have enough disk space, time, money and kit to optimise things like Resolume, but, it won't be anytime soon.
my biggest problem with using resolume is that I have thousands of clips, all made at different times, with different codes / cameras / sizes / etc etc which is one of the reasons I still use my (now aging rapidly) live 3D rendering package (DreamRender) to overcome such problems. When I've converted all those clisp to optimise resolume then I might consider building my PC / config specifically for Resolume. i remember being told by Arkoas that I wouldn't ever be able to run thier software reliably on a PC unless it had nothign else installed, ie dedicated. Sod that. |

skip norton its to heavy, and you still gonna have problems.
use these two: Spy Sweeper & Avast. since i had them installed i haven't got problems with virus or RAM abuse |

I think you are missing my point.
To ensure you have a crash free enviroment you must understand how windows works. To cut out all the techy stuff, you can clean install windows with slipstreamed update packs and run trouble free, thats the way its been designed. Once you start adding software and hardware, windows (and any other OS) will undoubtedly start acting in ways it was not designed (even the slightest conflict). So my advice to you, without having to explain the in & outs of x86 based OS's is to K.I.S.S (keep it simple sucker) Unless of course you are guru's to f*ck on the software layer of windows operation, then by all means CHOP, HACK, CUT, SLIM & OPTIMISE to your hearts content. So, have a running install of windows with all you 3rd party apps...then...have a dual boot second insall of XP with only the bare essentials, slimmed components and optimisations. Youll find that when performing live, you have elimenated all or most of any typr of conflict that could 'f*ck you' in the heat of the moment. As far as disk space goes, a nice slimmed up XP install can take up less than 2GB!! YOU DONT NEED ANTIVIRUS ETC ON A SECOND XP INSTALL ON A DUAL BOOT SYSTEM!!!! you can use the first install with you everyday shit installed to keep tabs on the second installations files & data! Just dont use the second install for anything but live AV! Think of it like having a date with your dream partner, remove the pesky brother, annoying parents, financial obligations and what not........then cruise in to home base. Thats a shite comparison, but i hope you get my advice. Peace |

I agree, making multiple users is the way to go, especially if you use the internet on the same machine, make an account to do your work and surf the net (with some virus scanner) and make a VJ account with no virus scanners, screen savers, power saving, stripped down services etc etc. I just disable ethernet completely on my VJ account just to be safe... and don't use the admin account to surf the net or you'll affect all user accounts, use it only when absolutely necessary.

rapideye of course it will run faster with two disks or partitioned
and i'm planning to get the 40gb disk, running with just winxp+drivers+codecs and resolume+samples... and he should do the same, but he asked about norton...he may not have time to set back work one or two whole days... copying formating and reinstaling all of it.. robotfunk a second acount in win xp doesnt solve those problems we're talking about, lets face it, its a poor os, it allways has been, and i hope someday its gonna get better. so if you're in a hurry install avast, for now, and when you got the proper setup of your machine, stick with avast, its the best and faster on the market anyway. the bloody thing can detect a virus in a download file even before he finishes the download... and spysweeper is the same thing spyware-wise |

I find that user accounts work fine as long as you don't use admin as your main account, which is hard to avoid in xp.

RapidEye - thanks for taking the time to advise / help, I appreicate it, but, I was pulling your leg a little, sorry.
(I've been working with the 8086/8088 + + + microprocessors since 1982, MSDOS 1.0, (and even CPM which pre-dates DOS). Ii've coded disk drive sub systems in assembler and know 2000/XP / WinTel server OS and networking pretty well, did my OSI layer 7 training in 1987 etc. I've also designed some fo the the server clustering and load balancing that is in Citrix server products in the mid nineties, some of which is still the same now, I also used to do mainframe and mid-range coding but gave it up as I hate those enviro's.) My post hear about Norton Internet Security (NIS) was simply to advise others than even when you DISABLE all NIS functions, it still requires reg hacks to switch off blocking / filtering of some of the ACK packets that MS NET file and print services rely upon. Totally shit software. My lappy had NIS (with Anti Virus) on as my company (/ work) dictated it, and, as Technical Director I have to set an example. PLUS - the desktop PC's in my rig don't run any anti-virus etc (they are connected via cross-over cables etc). However - they have been inbfected with virus's at gig's when other people have loaded logo files etc from CD / memory stick. BEWARE - just because you kmnow the source of such files doesn't mean that they are aware of any virus's in the files..... Anyway, any problems I have with Resolume are down to codec's and resolution mis-matches (I have clisp from 180 pixels upto 1280.... and just about everything in-between). cheers Sticks. |
