yeah..., I think it is derivative from Barry Says, even the colors and the narrator, but low-rent in comparison. I know it's a student project.... I'm just not alarmed that Google scans its own free gmail (have you ever needed to search your email to find something?), and unlike what the film says, google publicly rebuffed the state dept when they went hunting for childporn and wanted to access search samples from a given day. After Google said "no" everyone else said "no", and even AOL who had been reported as cooperating said they actually also had also said "no". It was a wierd McCarthy-esque moment of judicial grandstanding (when was this -- about a year ago?), but Google was the corp strong enough to say no to the govt. It made the witch hunt seem like -- well, a witch hunt.
I'm suprised there is no mention of Google's collaboration with Chinese censorship. That seems to be the most compromising punch against the "don't do evil" motto. Apparently these German students are more worried about their free gmail accounts than Chinese thought crimes which lead to real persecutions and arrests. If the CIA really wants to read German media student's gmail.... I mean, there are greater threats to freedom in the world. Anyway, don't we still believe in (what was the Pentagon computer that supposedly read every email and listened to every phonecall? Gah, it is on the tip of my tongue). You could switch to hotmail or yahoo mail if you are paranoid about spying in your free Gmail.... I stopped using the forums PMs for 2 years because I was paranoid they weren't private enough.... Some of the graphics were good (the group of people turning their heads especially), but the color pallette, even the narration seemed copied from Barry Says, but not done as well. That pronounciation of prih-vih-see always makes me think of a toilet. The American pronounciation may be less elegant PRY-vah-see, but it makes me think someone is prying or spying, not just watching me pee.... I guess that is only valid for Americans, but there you go. The narration in Barry Says seemed better. I also thought Barry Says' 2.5D was more elegant and mographic-y than most of the 3D here. In Barry Says shapes often became other things, here it seemed there was less going on.... (maybe the subject just had fewer graphic elements) Finally, the fear of chromasomal data, I didn't fully understand and felt it wasn't made clear in the film. As yet there is no risk someone will steal my genetic information and synthesize a clone.... Maybe there is fear you will not be hired for a job because of a genetic health risk? There are even people whose bodies are a different sex than their chromosomes (leading to all sorts of embarrasment when your dna is scanned at the airport) but again dna-scans are not a reality in our surveilance-happy world. It's as if an electron microscope is able to expose more of your privates than a regular security camera. It just doesn't seem like a practical fear. No examples are given, just a rotating double-helix animation. I don't get it. Even in criminal investigations, dna evidence is the goodguy getting people off death row. I don't know of any case where someone was unjustly treated because of their chromasomes.... (I suppose it could be used in eugenics, but plenty of genocydes have occured without the benefit of dna). Is this a new fear I've missed? There is some fear of a national health registry where doctors will look up your file rather than examine you personally. A misdiagnosis could be perpetuated indefinitely and getting a second opinion irrelivant. This is a real fear, but I think it's unlikely doctors would use free Google instead of some payola medical industry database. I've even heard doctors complain that the internet has made their jobs harder because patients actually research their symptoms and bring in print-outs. I'd say again, the internet is the goodguy over the closed medical establishment that too often plays god with absolute authority.... Not trying to defend Google -- as I said not mentioning China censorship was a suprise. I like pretty propaganda, but I need it to substantiate its claims rather than just dazzle me with 3D animations and mographics. Nothing turns me off more than being told something is a threat but not being told why. My BS detector goes full swing and it interferes with my ability to enjoy the pretty. Anyway, thanks for posting this. I'll watch it again.... |

lurch:: http://www.knife-party.net/flash/barry.html
it's beautifull! holy:: totally agree that not mentioning the china/goolge relationship is a big fault and it may even discredit it a bit. i didn?t post this as a preach! (i've actually inicially declared it as propaganda!), nor i'm here even to discuss how far it is true or not and that would probably take a long time anyway. I still think there r some facts we can?t just ignore and i don?t think most of the gmail users were happy when they noticed that contextual ads bar on the side of their e.mails. there's one thing called privacy and it's a right (say in your constitution, some gods laws or just part of being human!). google is not respecting that right, analyzing ad parsing the text on your e-mails, ofering the users services that are soooo usefull (and ignorantly giviing some much info on their lives to gooogle), their tastes, calendars, contacts....whatever.. it is also true that google its one of the very closest thing of a monopoly on the web and they're investing a looot of money on research (not only on web services and networking!). well, it's your own right to be concerned or not (and changing your e.mail account to yahoo or other service provider might not change things that much (on your side and their side)). yep, it's a shame that the grafz style and narrative were so closely copied from barry but that doesn?t mean their don?t have some right facts about google. Information is good! r_x * )

nice bit of flash, thats about it.
i'm always amazed when people are suprised that their info is being shared by these companies, especially myspace. its like people think these companies are providing free services out of the kindness in their hearts. interesting tho that charging for services is being replaced by payment by information. quite a worrying development all in all. just amatter of time till we have no rights over our privacy at all, and companys will start pitching premium services to those who dont want to be part of the info-network. obviously those services exist already, but they arent pitched in quite that way yet. |

I cannot listen to this as I have no sound at the moment but is it a parody of the knife party propaganda?
