Phantasmagoria was more theatrical/stage. I'd start with vaudville Magic Lantern shows (esp since magic lantern was synchronized to music and sing-alongs), but agree it's all a footnote until psychedelic '60s introduces lightshow visuals.

Good luck! podcast it so I can sleep too!

V may have started with cavemen
but J certainly did not start before the late 1980s

before that it was not VJing, it was called something else,
mainly because it operated in a different way.

there's another argument that says, some bright spark wanted to be as well paid and famous as the DJs so they upgraded their job description to VJ
and in the process went from doing 12 hour nights backstage to doing 2 hour sets onstage and getting shagged more often.

if anybody knows who it was, buy him a beer from me.

Hardly what you'd call "a bunch of non- inititates"
I thought you were talking about the Women's Institute, or something.
I'd call that a captive audience myself. it'll be a piece of piss, especially with your experience and background.
Have fun!

the abstracted shapes of victor eggeling's 'symphonie diagonal' (screened in 1925) is imho one of the most important works in that it pre-guesses the kind of close study and re-iteration of shapes the same way some vj shows go.
please consider watching it. goes for 7 and a half minutes. not sure if the audio is the original in this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvDGcu4O3v8

victor eggeling was not a vj, however he has made an animated piece that would be incredibly useful in many vj's sets today. check the style, the movement, the sleekness of shape, etc etc.

Nice find! And no, the track is not from 1925!!
And also check the use of negative space - something many of us could do more.
