Default Net Curtain as screen experiences.

Hi fellow Video Scientists

I'm considering using a plain net curtain as a rear projection screen, the idea is to have it fill the front of the stage area with projections, allowing the crowd to also see through it to the dj's on stage.
I quite like the idea of dancers silhouetting my projections with their movements, and if possible i'll give the dancers a Wii remote to control the visuals as they dance.

Has anyone got any experiences of using net screens, and will 3,200 ansi be enough, there are a couple of crappy scanners in the rigging only so they shouldnt cause too much problem

Yes it will work - be carefull where you put the projector as you'll get a very bad hotspot from the lens if back projecting - you'll also send a lot of light onto the dance floor which people probably won't like. Front projection is a better idea although you'll blind the dj a bit.

Having done this recently, with around 7 layers of netting before the beam reached the booth and 2 x 3,500 lumen projectors, having just one will be blinding for the DJ and anyone else in the booth unless positioned carefully. I'd try it before the night.

The venue required proof of "Fire proofing" and doorman required to stop the punters pulling it down.....fine if you have plenty of ceiling space to work with.

make sure it's off white too if there's any uv lighting in the venue,

playing with layers and angles can work a treat

A DJ/Musician I work with regularly has just asked me a similar question to this and I'd appreciate some feedback/advice.

He wants to set up a regular screen at the back of the stage with a projector behind it, and a fishnet screen at the front of the stage with another projector aimed at it. He says he's done this in London and you get a 3D effect if both projectors are playing the same content.

Does anyone know if this will work ? if so what distances, heights are involved, what kind of fishnet works ?

Any advice appreciated.

you can pick up inherently flame retarded scenic gauze.

can't point you at any Japanese suppliers, but maybe you can ask a local for some voile

if you have a copy of the VJ book by dfuse, there is a clip of the light surgeons on the DVD called all points between - a multi projector version of what you want to achieve

or try this and this on you tube

You should check out the new Nine Inch Nails DVD, incredible setup with a curtain around the stage.
