I almost never been more ashamed as beeing called "VJ" as in fact it does not describe our work (or those more advanced ones) at all.
visual performance visual act but on the other hand we still have to be lucky to be called at least somehow...because promoters usually dont even mention who is doing visuals if you cover e.g. the whole night line-up of few bands ... because then also lighty engineers whould like to be on poster and sound engineers too and stage-hands too etc. : ))this biznis sux.. |

I don't use VJ to my name.. prefer not too
Visualist is the term I would rather use, though keeping up with International standardization, term VJ would be more commonly accepted and understood. Quote:
more likely to give fuller appreciation on seeing some other professional at work. Besides, people's opinion change. DJing is also evolving, and appreciation on further aspect of seeing live performances growing for music as well as visuals. |

I've never heard anyone say they'd go to a club to see a VJ. .
Hehe - you've never been to a psytrance event? I find alot of people in our neck of the woods don't even know what a vj is - so I wouldn't be to bothered with any 'post 80's MTV presenter' or other cliches. When people ask you what you do - what do you tell them? You can sum it up by simply saying vj. Hence the label I guess.

There are actually a few events where poeple turn up to see the visuals and installations more than the DJs..
Just in the past few months, I did a few festivals where the visual side was attracting at least as much people, or more people for the visual lineup and the different installations: - Transmediale / clubtransmediale in Berlin - Vision'R in Paris - Avit Berlin (of course )- Paysages Electroniques in Lille - Mapping festival in Geneva - Cuisine Bristol // VJschool - Futuresonic in Manchester (with many lectures, installations and interactive stuff..) - Most of Lego_man appearances are a very special event.. And there are many more.. I don't understand why it's not the same in UK, things seems to be quite different, which I found quite strange, as there are many A/V acts from UK, strongly linked to the VJ scene (Coldcut, Eclectic method, Addictive TV, Hexstatic, D-Fuse) and touring and attracting crowds all around the world more than many other DJs, isn't it a sign ? I'm convinced that some VJs are get bigger and bigger (of course not commercial VJs, I mean artistic visuals), and rules are already changing.. I haven't been there yet, but I heard that Optronica and AVSocial are very "visuals orientated", and I hope that kind of event will grow and change people's minds. I thought that at list VJs were already convinced, but I was wrong.. :P |

"VJ" is just a label, like genres, it makes it easier for people in clubland to work out what you bring to the party. "Mixxin Visuals for Clubs" is the best way to tell non-clubland folk what your up to, "live visuals by" is a grand little explanation for the flyer.
Personally I don't use "VJ" in my description of myself, but I have no probs if someone refers to me as a Vj, or a visual artist for that matter. I reckon people get too hung up on terms which are coined to abbreviate explanations of things, to make it sound-bitesize, for easy digestion by preoccupied minds!! haha! http://www.youtube.com/MediaButcher |
