Default UK copyright

seems changes may be afoot in the Uk regarding copyright.

this article in the guardian, says a govt, think tank has recommended up to 10 years inside for breach of copyright...???

boo.

i initially thought that coldcut had made all bbc content free to use for uk citizens, but it turns out that its only for no-commercial use. which kind of makes it pointless from the vj perspective that coldcut comes from. which is a shame, im sure they tried hard as they have to be some of the most famous copyright bandits in the world, but never seem to get done for it...

Default brick layers

A brick layer doesn't still get paid for the house he built 50 years ago, so why should Cliff Richard still get paid for some Elvis impersonation he did ? (by the way this legislation first emerged shortly Bliar had a holiday on Cliff's tropical island paradise)

I've always ripped off stuff, it's the same as sampling music, it's a reworking of something that means something to you. Sure I fvk it up a lot, but 70's documentaries showing scraggy kids, that's my world. If I've been fed media all my life why shouldn't I recycle it through my filter ? Youtube is a great source of stuff, crappy quality, but I like crappy quality & heavy filters.

We are witnessing some vested interests trying to retain control on easy money, the artists often got paid sweet FA, ask Roger McGuinn of the Byrds how much he made in the sixties. I see it as karmic, they switched from analogue to digital to increase their profit margins, the mark up on CD's was far greater than vinyl, same for DVDs. Now it's come round and bit them on the ass, tough.

Ahh, a fine example of the "abused child becomes the abuser" excuse! This one is my favorite. I don't know why. I think because it is like saying "I blame society!" -- much better than the "I can't build a nuclear submarine, therefore I MUST sample" excuse.

Once again, the UK is the tyranical meanies. How long you guys gonna blame USA and not look at your own corporate ass-sucking?

err the worldwide hatred of American "culture" is not some kind of misplaced blame of the innocent but a specifically targeted attack. why do we blame American for so much of the stupid corporate protection rackets that currently exist? because they are largely American in origin.

OK so in the states the public has a limited protection in the form of a written constitution and bill of rights. Even more reason for countries which lack these protection measures to be fearful of American style corporate laws. America is very good at introducing laws which are technically illegal or impossible to implement within the American constitution and these laws often remain ineffectual or are easy enough to argue against in courts. However when they are copied by countries outside of the states individuals often find they cannot use the same defences as used by us citizens to circumnavigate the legislation (often the only reason the laws were exported from the states in the first place is due to pressure from multinational corporations who threaten to pull out of non-us markets unless they are given the same protection as they get in US law)

so we the rest of the world are left in a position where we are subject to US style legislation without US style protection from that legislation.

also before we get overly excited about a proposed law it might be worth discovering what the actual proposed legislation is - a bungled article in the gruniad is hardly a good starting point for discussion...

well now here is a thing - i can be put in prison for 14 years for smoking pot - does it stop me doing me doing it? of course not

now 10 years for sampling - best i can hope for then is that it is a concurrent and not consecutive sentence the judge hands down when they catch me

I think it's more monkey see monkey do

but you might be able to argue that Robert Johnson deserves all copyrights to all western popular music for latter half of the 20th century
and all Keith Richard's performance rights too.
