Last month I took the first step to recovery by admitting to myself that I have a unhealthy relationship with The Internet. My addiction to the web has taken me trough all the classic stages of denial;
Projection - I don't have a problem - you have a problem! Rationalization - I use IRC because of my crummy job / life / wife /parents etc... Intellectualization - In a world as fucked up as this one, why not surf the night away?. Minimizing - Sure I download a few warez each day, but it's not a problem. Suppression - (forcing down memories of our using behavior and consequences of use) I only check my email now and then. Withdrawing - leaving relationships, jobs, etc. rather than face my problems. Geographic escape - If I move to South Korea people would better understand my "lifestyle"... Heavily addicted I have cut down on The Internet usage by being online less than an hour each time, and by not being online everyday. As a countermeasure to my Internet addiction I have also gotten my Honda SFX scooter up and working, now I can surf the actuall highway instead of the information highway and thats kinda cool. Next two steps are down with Jesus and I haven't been square with the dude lately so i'm procastanating and might skip to step 4 right away, but Jesus is cool like that, he understands... Step 4 - Make a searching and fearless moral inventory of myself. As a certain tight wearing, early balding starfleet captain would have put it: Engage!

Thanx ravy, I'm only cutting down on my online time, I'm not ready to go cold turkey. I'm not sure if I want to go completely offline, I'm not turning ludditee or anything ;-)
The post by Exhale that you linked too made me thinking. I think I have the same problem that Exhale had too, giving the computer and the internet to much attention and focus in my life. Exhale's post put words to a lot of things going on in my mainframe lately. Thanx! I remember Neoteo getting himself banned as the only way to stop his addiction, and I ain't going out like that. You won't get rid off me that easy!

I'm just happy we're coming out of Seattle's "blah" weather phase and getting into the good part of the year. Between that and buying a house, I'm going to have plenty to do that isn't staring at a computer screen.
Sounds like you'll be scooting about, which is good therapy. Time to grab a camera and go exploring? Collecting footage is a good excuse to get out of the house when you can't think of another one. See what those other humans are up to.

Heh, well, I had it too, but I really, cannot be online for just one hour a few days anymore. It has become useful now, though I do try to cut down on wasted time, like checking that thread about the cyclist guy ;D
So let's say I have a controlled addiction nowadays. It's sort of Methadone ;p |
