Default Preparing video for Web

I need help! Can't find the info using 'search'. I want to upload a music video onto the net. What pixel dimensions should I be using, is it 320x240? (square pix?) The PhotoJpeg codec has been recommened for VJing Quicktime clips, is it the same for uploading to the web?
The video is not for commercial purposes because the music is copyright (ala Squarepusher aka Chaos AD) so resolution doesn't have to be too high quality, but should still look good!

Maybe we could have a sticky about this (if it doesn't exist) a lot of people complain about download times when someone posts their video work for general view, I don't want to make the same mistake myself!

I often use Adobre Premiere with Cleaner Ez to compress videos for web. For ex i have a 5min video with sound, compressed with Premi?re and Cleaner Ez has a physical size about 9mb. Hope to help with

P.S. You can use Quicktime to, there are many choices

PhotoJpg/MJpg is good for VJ clips, but a little more rez and size than you need
for the web..
I have gotten clean web vids from using sorrenson/s3 with 30% quality and mp3 audio.

I guess it all depends on the length of your video for the web..

Thanks very much pedrolopes. I hadn't heard of Cleaner Ez before. 9mb for 5mins sounds perfect. My video is just over 4mins. I use Premiere Pro aswell but I'd rather use the imbuilt Quicktime compressor to save having to download more software.

Cheers for the tip tho!

Thanks Vjpixylight, what dimesions does 30% quality give you? Also, does the pixel shape need to change ie 'Square pix'. Sorry but I don't have a clue!

Cheers

Is it intended for VJs to use, or are you showing a piece? Pjpeg will be a larger download than necessary if all you want is people to see your work online.

For web movs try these settings:
Sorenson3 codec, 320*240, data rate 200kb/sec (LESS if your image can take a bit of compression and you want a quicker download, MORE if your image suffers from compression artifacts and you don't mind a slower download).
For audio try MP3 or QDesign2.

You can also try MP4 if you want it to play on video iPod, but in my opinion MP4 is often more chunky than Sorenson3 and a larger download.

If you are on osX use Lillipot to make the mov progressive download (play as it downloads), and Pageot to create the Embed and Object tags for your html page.

yea square pixels, (320x240)..
unless you are transcoding from PAL which you probably are.
in this case 360x304 sorrenson is used here.

here is an example of good PAL encoding down to an appropriate web size if your curious..

oh and like holly has mentioned(and unlike this link clip), using a program to make it progressive DLing(sorrenson3 will do it) helps keep peeps on that page, and not waiting, and waiting and waiting..

BTW BioPtix, if you have a showreel you want to show from this site, we'll be doing the March Showreel soon..

Cheers Pixylight and Holly! That's what I needed. This is just a music video not VJ content at the moment (that might change if people like it). I am using PAL so looks like 360x304 sorrenson is the one for me. I'm on PC so unfortunately the progressive DL tips for osX wont apply, is it the same as checking the box 'optimise for streaming' when you export movie from Premier Pro? Someone also mentioned a way of saving in Quicktime which does the same thing, is that the case?

BTW I'm not being funny Pixy but the video isn't loading on your site, maybe my Quicktime ap is buggered!
Unfortunatley all of my VJ showreel footage is still on my mate's hardrive in England (only just got my own laptop) so I've only got this music video material at the mo'. Otherwise I'd be up for the March Showreel, pity.

The best current way to web streaming is by using the new flash video encoder in flash 8, it creates video with no need for a streaming server plus creates tiny files.
