Real basic software?

still new to all this video mixing stuff so I think I'll start off small.
basically just looking for a program with 2 more separate playlists. I'm looking to play some videos, say when a music video ends it just fades or does some simple effect and changes into to the next video. be nice if the program can run by itself without too much supervision since other newbies may be using it as well.
would like to have the flexibility to be able to easily modify the playlist in realtime. don't have much $$ so a laptop is all I hav with projector that I can get

I have tried out neuromixer but both audio tracks are playing at the same time and uncertain how to close one. other problem is that quicktime wont play some of my mpeg files
tried resolume as well but not entirely sure what all the buttons do.

be cool if you can help a newbie out
