Default Replacing menu on dvd-r

I have a standalone DVD recorder which works well but produces an ugly menu screen. Whats the best way to replace the menu without transcoding the files?
If the main video data is split onto more than one .vob file can I just rename them to .mpg and set the end action of the first to play the second? Will this play seamlessly?

if you just wanted to get rid of a title menu then you could use DVD shrink (free).

Otherwise you could seperate the video titles and re-author the disk... but this is more work.
