Default My Compression is horrible

Ok, I downloaded a 62mb mpeg2 file that came at 640x480 and its 3 mins long (with audio).

I imported it into After Effects and rendered it out as:
avi
Cinepak Codec
400x300
100% quality
900bit
30fps
(no audio)

and the file size came to almost 200mb. It runs VERY choppy and the file size is triple the mpeg2 file. Does anyone have any idea whats the best way to compress this mpeg2 file? Or tell me what Im doing wrong?

Is 900bit exceeding your computer's internal bandwidth? When you make the video play at half-size does it play smoothly? This could be your video card.

I assume that leaving it as an efficient MPEG2 file is something that you don't want to do....

Search the forums for the phrase "CODEC COMPARISON" and there are a few threads which might help you choose another more modern codec than Cinepac.

I doubt the 900bit is exceeding my internal bandwidth.. My computer specs:

P4 2.8ghz (800mhz FSB)
1024mb RAM
Geforce 6800 (overclocked)

I need to rerender the mpeg2 file I did some cropping and editting.

I want to use another codec other than Cinepac but my VJ software is Resolume and it doesn't like DivX or any other compression I use.

Anyone have any suggestions for a good codec for Resolume other than the settings I have above (message 1)?

You can buy pic video mjpg for a resonable price, if you are not a comercial user.
