To keep the explanation simple : you spread lumens over a given area much like you'd spread paint. The larger the area, the more paint you need.

Neither the distance from the painter to the wall nor the width of his paintbrush has anything to do with it.

When you move a projector away from the screen, it DOES get dimmer. As you move it away, the image becomes bigger, and the total light is spread across a bigger area.
