Thanks Steve! I have called some of my local fabric shops and although they have voile in loads of colours (even sparkly stuff) with square and hex grid patterns, none are flame retardant

As they will be in full reach of the punters it is highly likely that a cigarette will catch one and I'm not taking any risks! Is the wedding dress voile you used inherently flame retardent?

I have found some theatrical suppliers on google (links not saved on this machine) who sell 'scrim' which seems to be the industry term for what I'm after, but it is quite pricey with a ?20 postage cost and large minimum order.

Thanks again for the help so far

Dont hear of too many brides being burned to death Pretty sure it has to be but check with the old ladies behind the counter It will carry a cert. In an attempt to prove our case we even held a lighter to it....it shrivelled but did not light....we still lost our case and a foot was cut....God bless the man at health and safety

Thanks for the info! Melting is ok - providing it doesn't produce any noxious smoke!

You need Trevira CS certified to be sure about fire codes. Voile does make good screens in some circumstances, but not always. First it is usually very transparent material and does not illuminate too well. We use it for special rear projections to have projector beam visible as a artistic value. Black voile is a different animal all together. it has very special characteristics and thus special applications - like image with black backround and live dancers on both side of the screen.
find pro materials. these are expensive, but deliver the most reliable results. for experiments where are no rewstrictions(like firecode) use cheap imaginative stuff like mulch fabric. You couls always try to chemically fireproof your setup.

Hey hey, nice to hear that Lego_man is inspiring people

He actually did a similar installation at Timbuk2 for Cuisine a year ago, quite similar to what you want to do, so I have a few pics that might help..

Loads more on:

And a video:

Would be strange to do the same installation in the same venue after he did, but there might be other ways to changes the place I'm sure..

Hi Joanie! Good to see you at Cuisine's 1st B'day - loved the outfit!

I didn't see this install - gutted!! I obviously don't want to copy the screen setup.....back to the drawing board! I'm thinking about doing squares now instead e.g. one large square with the centre cut out and a smaller square behind and so on...I will have to make a lightweight wooden/plastic frame and they won't be easy to transport/reuse.

Any thoughts? Would be good to bounce ideas off you as you already know the space! The night will be on the 7th July (LOCO).

Thanks for the tips vanakaru - much appreciated!!

edit: As I will have to use that location for one screen setup I'm thinking about doing a variant:
....something like this at it's simplest!

i was gonna build a multilayered fabric screen setup for a gig with the trigger soundsystem a couple of months ago at clockwork in bristol, but the venue wasnt suitable - i'd only seen a couple of photos of it beforehand so wasnt sure. i tested it out at home though and it looked beautiful though, the imagery just hangs somewhere in the middle of the layers. i got a load of voile from the local wedding material shop in hackney, they also sold me some fire retardant spray to go on it and they cut it into strips for me - lovely people

anyway heres some footage of the test - i'm definitely gonna do some more of this kind of thing - i had 4 layers of 4 or 5 strips, each about 9ft high, and my 3000lumen beamer was only about 3 metres away, with a short throw lens - anything more and i'd want more light thrown at it - i want more light anyway, more beamers, more layers etc etc
