Sorry if this has already been answered somewhere, but I couldn't find the info...
I've been running demos of what seem to be the most commonly used VJ softwares, and am about to buy a full version. I was going to get Modul8, but a lot of people seem to be using MadMapper...or both? I'm confused, what's the best to get, or do I need both? What's the advantage of using the layers in M8 but outputting through MadMapper? I'm mostly interested in mapping onto lots of random shapes, more that just flat panels around a DJ booth. Any advice really appreciated. |

Madmapper is a plugin for mapping, so you can't use this alone.
You need modul8 (or vdmx, or resolume or some other syphon able app) for playback and then you use madmapper for the mappings. |

Be aware that Modul8 is very slow to evolve. Even if it works rather good the team seams to lost the interest or power to develop the app any further. Also Modul8 does not interact well with new tools made with QuartzComposer, Syphon, FreeFrame Plugins. It is easy to unite with MIDI controller, but is crippled to map controls any creative way.
I am Modul8 user from 2005, but now I look more for Resolume, CoGe, and VDMX if I have a need for performance tool. And specially for Resolume that offers great speed with their own accelerated codec DXV. Since all these named apps have Syphon output you can use MadMapper for mapping. And yes MadMapper is standalone app that sells the same amount as M8. Last edited by vanakaru; 30th July 2012 at 04:13 PM. |

@vj granda: you know what I mean
It's some sort of plugin because you can't use it on its own.Resolume is very good, also for mapping you might look to resolume arena. |

Sorry Alfaleader but I desagree with You. Madmapper is a stand alone application that can play clips, nothing to do with a plugin.

Can madmapper bb used without any other program? (I don't know, I only tried the demo once).
But it doesn't matter what it is, as long as it works

So basically, MadMapper is just a way of mapping my content, it doesn't have any way of modifying my content?
Modulat8 is just for creating my tracks and modifying my media clips, I don't use it for mapping? One isn't much use without the other? Am I better buying something like Resolume then? |

No, Modul8 is really good VJ app. It has external module(free) MapMapMap that gives you good tools for basic mapping. So by having just M8 you can do some mapping as well.
MadMapper is more like professional app for complicated mapping that takes media feed from other apps - Modul8, Resolume, VDMX and so on. Resolume Arena has mapping tools included and this reflects in the cost too. Or you can purchase IR Mapio or any other mapping app addition to Resolume. There are quit many to choose from. Basically if you look for app that works well and easy and will not change much, get Modul8. If you look for fast evolving app get Resolume, VDMX, CoGe, Millumin. |
