what midi controller do you have?
many have a usb connection to connect to a pc and also another midi out, that way you can trigger 2 devices at the same time..

I've read that some people do this connection in order to have a multi display screen in sync.

If I've understood correctly what you want to do, it is reasonably simple to accomplish in Arena using an external Artnet (essentially DMX over Ethernet) controller to trigger both laptops in sync.
Fastest way to get it done and up on the screen goes like so: ONE Build your complete show in Arena on one computer, with all the clips built and tweaked the way you want them (doing this editing in Arena rather than using the DMX controller, as that gets pretty fiddly pretty quickly). TWO Copy the Arena show file and content to the second computer, making whatever Advanced Output adjustments are necessary for your second set of screens. THREE Learn how to connect the two computers to your DMX controller via Artnet (this should take you an hour or two), then in your DMX controller patch (create a data connection to) the two Arena servers. Resolume publishes detailed information on DMX/Artnet connections in the manual, as well as a complete breakdown of the DMX/Artnet channel assignment. This should be included in your installation of Resolume. FOUR In the DMX controller, create triggers (usually called "cues") in DMX-speak that will fire the pre-built content clips you created in Arena. It's absolutely possible to manipulate your content using the DMX controller - among other things, Arena's pre-built DMX protocol lets you map each Dashboard Knob to a fader on the DMX desk - but the more you can pre-build in Arena the faster it will go. As for which DMX controller to use, I strongly recommend Chamsys MagicQ. It's professional-grade (it drives the Nine Inch Nails and Tiesto tours among others) and best of all the software is a free download. For this particular application, you don't even need a DMX dongle as you can create an Artnet connection over IP from a $200 netbook if you need to. That should get you started, best of luck! |
