projector lenses project off centre. projectors are traditionally at the top or bottom of the screen and only half of the lens is used..
I'm wondering if this accounts for the problems people seem to be having with lenses in 3D programs.

No expert on the subject but just trying to get my head around the same concept. In Cinema 4d when you select a camera there is a couple of attributes labelled film offset x and film offset y. A y offset of 50% seems to simulate the effect of a projector lens. ie It moves the cone from the camera so the top comes straight out at 90degrees to the lens and the bottom shifts down. Exactly as a projector beam. I have yet to find time to experiment with this properly in terms of actually lining it up with a real world projector.
