It always hurts when someone breaks your confidence to the point where you lose not only confidence in that person but in people in general. But this has nothing to do with being a hippy They get shafted too I'm sure

I was burgled twice in 2 years and had all my kit taken on both occasions, beamer, many laptops, camcorders, stills cameras etc.

It really affects your confidence, you mistrust people and sets you back years in terms of professional development due to having to re-create stolen clips etc.

I'm not really a VJ anymore, but have invested in lots of security as I dont think you ever recover from the feeling of vulnerability after someone has broken into your home.

Dont blame yourself, and try to overcome that feeling of mistrust as it really eats away at you...

I remember having a pair of binoculars stolen.
In order to do this, the security at earls court ( who were the only people in the venue overnight) had to climb two levels of scaffolding, open a flight case and remove 4 larger items until they found something small enough to fit in their pocket. They then replaced everything and closed the case as though nothing had happened.
Yup you sure cant trust anyone. Its going to happen sooner or later, no matter how hard you try to make sure it doesn't. All you can really do is manage your losses by not making it too easy for them..

n

At one of the biggest Grateful Dead/Hippie festivals in my area a few weeks ago, several of the vendors were all hit by a group of younger attendees who had been shopping earlier. First time that has ever happened there and everyone was upset, not only the vendors.

Not everyone attending these events now is a hippie in the true sense. There is an element there now that are only there for the partying, not for the music, mostly younger.

Sadly, we are all more watchful now.

Its important to have a good insurance policy to cover kit replacement, and build the cost of this into your VJ fee.

Maybe team up with another VJ offering clip creation services etc untill you can replace all your kit?

Default A new start!

OK, 2 weeks ago my engine blew in my car on the way to a gig. I was fortunate that it happened at the only place for 40 miles that I could pull over safely, and that I could get in touch with the band members who came by, picked up me and my equipment, and got me to the gig and back.

It was a bad thing, but I just couldn't be unhappy that night, I had a great show.

My son bought me a new car, so I decided it was a good opportunity to get exactly what we needed, my little car had been much too small for the equipment, screens, light rack, computers, etc. I now have a VW Passat wagon that is plenty long enough to haul my stuff. I sold the old car and used that money to buy the components for a new computer with enough power to run the show right.

My point is- the bad event gave me a chance to step up to an even better setup. (with the help of my son, of course). Look forward and see where you are going, not where you have been.
