Audiovisual-psycedellic-live theatre..! I have the idea, but no clue on vj-ing....?

Hi!

Totally fresh to the vj thing, but me and a friend, both hobby-dj's, have come up with an idea

What we want to do, is to perform a live dj/vj/mc(?) show, with all kinds of different music, accompanied by pictures and vids, with underlying usual patterns and colors.
We want to communicate with the audience through live-typing, no voices, only written words, and pic, projected into big screen.

The audience will be a gathering of more or less close friends, a group of maby 100-200 souls, who have been coming together for the past 5 years in various parts of the country, dancing,laughing, loving and sharing....

Now, the vids and pictures blasted onto the big screen, will be compiled from a vast arcive of material collected throughout theese past five years, and we will be communicating to the people directly, sometimes Even by name, through the live-typing and the pic/vid thing.... Kind of an "oh i remeber that, that shit was hillarious.... You have no idea what i was thinking there....... Hahahaha aha" kinda thing...... Audiovisual-standup-theatre.....

Oh, did i mention that there will be lights..... And maby costumes, light on me, then on him.... Maby we argue.....? Maby we laugh, maby we fight.... Through costumes, bodylanguage, MUSIC, and written words...... And so on.....

This is kinda what we want to do..... Now how do we do it? If possible....

So the people supply the words/pics/videos?

People whould have to go to a special site to write their stuff/upload their pictures. Pics are uploaded to a folder on your computer, the things they write go to a rss feed.

My first thought would be to use quartz composer (only mac). There are a few quartz composer patches that watch a folder and make it to a slideshow.
It's also possible to get text from a rss feed (or twitter) and show it.

For videos youtube will be the easiest, but I don't think you can do youtube in quartz (maybe with cogewebkit, but not sure). This is also an option: http://protu.be (people can add links to the party "video playlist", there is also an admin interface

As we Are a pretty close group, people send me pic and vids either on mem stick, cd or similar.... Dropbox etc.... We have a WHOLE year to prepaire for this show, but allot to learn... I have been thinking about maby making several small sequences, pre organised and synced to different tracks...

And we will deffinetly have a script...... But a loose one... i want the ability to juggle about a bit as we go along.....

As for the live texting thing, one could just go real primal;if there isnt a sorteste that can handle it, and use two projectors on the same screen, simply using some sort of Word program with black text on white background....

I feel i need a videosampler.... Sending out series of clips and pics at the touch of a button.... would Be great in addition to/and/Or ordre order sequences.....

One could off course use PowerPoint, but surely there must be a better way???

Do the vids/pics/... need to be live? Else you can just make it pre edited and just play it with VLC or something else. Quick and dirty style
If you want it live, you'll need some sort of vj program. Resolume 2.4 could do picture slideshows I think and also videos, but it's quite old so maybe you can get it cheap. Now you can trigger clips/slideshows.

The live texts can be done with a computer and powerpoint, hook up a projector to your computer and make the background of your desktop black. Now make your powerpoint (prepare a template and just type the text in it) and start it in presentation mode. If you have new text, exit the powerpoint (because it's presentation mode and the background is black nothing will pop up at the beamer) and edit the powerpoint.
If you want constant text, we used once (a while ago) this method with powerpoint but with a video mixer and 2 laptops (1 is live and you can type the text on the 2nd laptop).
Or once again, use resolume for overlays with text (you can edit the text live)

Resolume eh...... Will have to check that out.... Im thinking that the vids and pics can be semi-live, smaller pre-edited segments, synced/adapted to the musical tracklist..... Hmmmm......

by just doing it -

sorry but ffs you are either going to express your self or your not -

that choice is yours wether your a vj or not, weter u have any kit or not -

i realy am sorry if i offend you (it realy aint wat i want to do) but you dont need fancy kit to create a space you need "dam stupid luck" and mayby a smatering of how to minipulate the outside world

so haveing said that have to cahoones to see it all the to the end and mayby you wont regret your life?

well theres a theroy anyway, it might just work ????

Hey Onkel, I would recommend to hire someone, either as a technical consultant, or as a VJ. Put in some 3D-mapping, and you can create some depth in it, learning from the VJ in the process so "du ikke famler i blinde neste gang" ;-)
