hmm so which other codecs are gpu accelerated? for some f*ing stupid reason my hackintosh won't play my mjpeg clips in avenue. every other vj program, just not avenue. obv there's dxv and .lov. says h264 on some gpus, but which ones? minuek says that over on the vdmx forums they're recommending apple intermediate codec for vjing with... don't know if it's gpu acclrtd or not... and surely only decent apps are going to be able to use it or at least more recent operating systems.

Intermediate is CPU based I believe, but is multithreaded, and is recommended by catalyst users too. (you need to get the codec from installing final cut or take it from a mac with fcp on it...
TBH I've never found anything that says that prores is GPU powered, tom you got a link there?
Mjpg should work fine really, if it works in quicktime should work in anything...?? I'd troubleshoot that before re coding all your vids...

just checked in quicktime inspector on my mbpro and it says codec apple OpenDML JPEG. on the hacky it's slightly different, says motion JPEG OpenDML. might just try installing ffmpegx and streamclip. edit i already have those installed. any way of listing codecs on mac? and forcing certain codecs to take precedence?

I'm pretty sure about ProRes is not hardware accelerated.

I posted a link on that thread where the docs says which cards have GPU acceleration with h264. Anyway, do NOT use h264 coded videos with ANY vj softwares - that codec never could be useful in any live situation.

I'm pretty sure ProRes isn't GPU accelerated, but i'm pretty sure it is optimized for multi core systems, and very SSE2/3/4 aware.
I'm not sure if it is AVX enhanced yet, but FCPX definitely is.....

That is not totally true. On a few recent projects I've been using h264 for playback of some clips on both Watchout and another media server that is still in development. So it CAN be useful in some live situations - but it's not usually the case.

I never said it won't working But it uses inter-frame compression, which _basically_ means you (the server) needs to process multiple frames to produces a frame, while if you are using a non-interframe compression, like Photo-Jpeg, you (the server) can access _easily_ to different frames.
