was pondering whether to go for a TVone 1T-C2-750 DVI x fader or get the computer driven multichannel Blackmagic ATEM Television Studio mixer.
its more pricey if you include the computer, but more useful by far... I was thinking of getting a HDMI -> SDI converter and the TVone, but that brings them in at pretty much the same price.. just worried about being caught out with HDCP on the HDMI system. it happened once on a show and was a real pain Last edited by deepvisual; 23rd June 2012 at 09:54 PM. |

The 2 are quite different.
The TV studio has more inputs (maximum 6), but can handle only "standard" resolutions. If you do a lot with sdi cameras, take this. The 1T-C2-750 has only 2 DVI-I inputs but has scalers so you can scale to each resolution you want (maximum 2k x 2k). If you just want a simple mix between 2 computers (or one camera) with all resolutions and possibility to add a triplehead/datapath, this is the piece of gear you'll need

TBH you kind of need a windows PC (with serial port!) to control the TVOne - once you have configured it for a given purpose you can put the PC away and use its buttons but setup without the PC app is an utter pain and might simply be impossible if you are doing something at an odd resolution which needs the monitor.
The Blackmagic is a great little switcher if you have SDI cameras for it. HDMI is a shitbag and basically doesn't work for any gig useful cable length.

I was thinking of using it primarily for computers, but I do like the SDI out...

ATEM works ok for computers, so long as your happy sticking to real video resolutions (PAL,720p,1080i only)
I'm hoping that we will start to see some VJ apps with proper output support again soon (VJamm 1 had proper component PAL output via a Matrox or DVS card back in the day) The combination of the new macbook pro with a thunderbolt SDI interface would give nice quality video and the possibility for linear keying (where 2 outputs are used to send fill and key signals giving a perfect overlay) - this would be an amazing step forward for VJs output quality! http://skaarhoj.com/wiki/index.php/V...ATEM_Switchers this project has a lot of potential for giving the ATEM a hardware interface for VJ use (personally I hate the DJ style layout - it's slow, fiddly and easy to make mistakes on - as Kasper demonstrates in the video! Traditional program / preset vision mixer layout make a lot more sense which is why it is used on pretty much all broadcast switchers. But for some reason VJs like to think they know better and want to look like a DJ, but Kasper has solutions for both layouts - all opensource and thus very affordable.)

I guess one way to look at the Blackmagic's resolutions support is that it forces in to moving on as far as formats go. The future is going to be signals in 16:9 and HD resolutions.
We may be doing mapping or other random LED wall setups but they all fundamentally based on HD resolutions. If you need to take a SD/XGA input, buy some sort of cheap scaler and if you need to output to a 4:3 screen, just work to a cropped 16:9 output. |
