Question Which vj app would be the best to execute the following:

Hello,

I want to be able to switch between different video files which all started playing at exactly the same time. Allmost like you would edit a multi camera captation.

So if you would cut/switch between them they would continue playing and not start from the beginning or resume where you left. And every layer/video file is at the same time/timecode.

Anyone an idea which app would be great for this?

I hope this was understandable, if not let me know, my English is not the best.

Greetings,
Jack

This is in theory though. If the videos are longish they will drift out of synch eventually, this might not be an issue depending on how tight the synch needs to be.

Yep syncing videos to a master midi clock signal should keep them all in time, my main concern would be triggering multiple clips, if your only talking 1 or 2 videos then wouldn't be an issue however if your planning on triggering alot of clips at the same time and expect them all to stay in time then your systems going to be hammered trying to keep all the videos essentially running simultaneously.

Maybe attaching the videos to a timeline in ableton may provide a way to achieve this,

Or build your audio into a timeline and set midi triggers, ie set a trigger every 20 seconds or every 4th bar etc and break your content into chunks of that length, so that the midi can trigger a clip off a deck in VJ software, then you could just swap clips to alternate the content. Has the added advantage that ableton could also feed out the midi clock for the vj software to sync to.

how about multiple video tracks in sony vegas controlled via MIDI/USB from an external control surface?
there is an appendix in the vegas manual explaining how to map vegas actions to midi controllers,
that mite include soloing tracks too, no?

AvStumpfl's Wings Platinum software (both the Pro and the Multi-display versions) will do that with its "Mix Groups" feature. The number of simul video tracks will depend on the oomph factor of the playback PC -

A short description of the Mix Groups feature -
Mix groups

The mix group function can be used for spontaneous and differentiated dissolves of parallel track contents during playback – these can be pictures, video or sound. Mix groups can be formed from one or several tracks and can be faded in or out or to a certain transparency level during the presentation. Control of mix groups is via triggers and keys linked up. The optional Show Control license allows also external controllers with faders to be used.

A simple type of trigger that I've used with this feature is the Functions keys of one's PC - from F1 to F12. Slightly more complex would be a RS-232 keyboard plugged in as a Remote Device to the PC running Wings. Think the software will also take MIDI IN as triggers tho' I've not tried that myself.

The PRO version is cheaper but cannot network with others. The more expensive Multi-display version will network to extend the number of fullscreen outputs in a Master-Slave(s) node configuration.

Isadora of course. However, no matter which app you go for, you will be limited to a certain amount of simultaneous layers depending on the quality of your compression/resolution and the capability of your hard drive (more than anything else).

VJamm Pro has special mode for this. It will happily playback 16 synchronised AV clips - they will stay in sync for months. You can mute / unmute them from midi or the keyboard.

VJamm is still better than any other tool for this.
