Default transparent LCD screen

It is my understanding that a backlit LCD monitor is a filter put in front of a white diffusing surface. I would like to have just the LCD filter, and not all the backlighting apparatus. Here are my questions :

Is there any way to buy such a thing on the market ? Maybe there is a product I do not know about.

Has anyone ever removed the backlighting system from a LCD monitor and still get it to work ?

If it's possible, how does it look like ? Can you see through it ? Are the black areas opaque or semi-opaque ? Are the white areas transparent or translucid ? Are there any color shifting issues or other issues affecting image quality (beside the fact that of course there is no backlighting !).

It's hard to google that subject because there are so many fakes on the net - you might remember the transparent laptop trick craze from a few years back...

All of those clear screens in films are just simulations.

What you are describing would be like the old monochrome overhead projector systems.

Today's displays are the backlight, then a panel sandwich of polarizers, color filter, brightness enhancing films, and the panel of transistors/ electrode layers and LCD cells. The cells look like silver grey sparkle. Transreflective panels might be a little more interesting, but backlit panels with all the layers don't let much light through. A local laptop repair place might be able to demonstrate a partially working panel on a teardown.

Most of the panels are assembled with adhesive. You might look for a local custom display manufacturer to get a raw panel and driver. The e-paper ones are in production, but don't run at video rate. All the panels are made in Korea, Japan, Taiwan and China today.

The interesting looking displays are OLED on glass. Expensive and not long life, for now.

never found a company hows building that... I did build it one time for a college, an art project with a caddle behind the lcd screen, worked well. its actually a piece of glass with video onit... if you put some light behind it, it becomes more visual. black areas are opaque but the lcd's makes a black value (projector grey)

if you have a little lcd screen you might get it yourself. if you go bigger than 12 inch you'll get an lcd screen with all the electronics behind the backlight, really tight cabling and packing inside... so its hard to get all the electonics behind the lcd free from view... need some electronic chirgury...

Is there anyone here who could recommend some kind of LCD hacker/modder who could do some tests for me (with remuneration of course) ?

when black, the panel would, ideally, be opaque - but isn't (hence the backlight bleed and lack of perfect black, so characteristic of lcd's). when white, it is basically transparent.

i'm not sure how the panel would look like in typical indoor lighting conditions - i've only seen it when backlit by the ohp. if you try it, i would be interested in hearing about how the panel looks, say, suspended from something (backlit only by ambient light). i would suppose you'd need to use very high contrast (black/white, maybe) to display a recognizable image...

actually I have some old touchscreen LCD panels luring around from DIY projects. its no problem to rip them apart to the bare electronics. PM me and tell me about your project and the exact requirements, what youre after and I will see if I can help you.

Do a search for "DIY LCD projector" and you'll find loads of people taking LCD screens apart.
