This weekends gig is in an aircraft hangar using 6 screens dotted around the walls.
See how lost that 14 x 10 looks in the space! Each projector is to be wired back to a centrally located video matrix switcher. As you can imagine the wiring job is gonna be fun & this is my first vj gig using Cat 5 & baluns. I've picked up a cool 4 channel composite balun pair which works pretty well up to 400m, which will be a good start to getting a feed from control point to the furthest projectors. Unfortunately mains power will have to be run alongside the Cat 5 in cable trays for some portions of the runs. My question is are Cat 5 systems affected by mains power running alongside the cable, does cable quality affect the problem dramatically?

If it's in a "Forces" working Hangar....just tell them where you need the power points Col. They'll do the work for you. There are numerous office corridors in most hangars, you can take the power from various sources. Take your cat 5 over the top.
Ask...get them to attached UCM.....they can get tons of the stuff to the beams which lowers the ceiling...or gives a good impression of doing so. It's also good for the sound. Hope they've got a big enough sound system in....lol Done a few of these With regards to you specific question my gig the other week in the O2 Leeds had the cat 5 plugged into the wall next to the power supply and I take it ran along the same duct to all the way to the stage. I had no comparison to say however whether the picture would have been better under different circumstances. |

You can get shielded Cat-5 cables for the reasons you mention. Read more about Cat-5 and shielded cables here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat-5
