I don't think you are understanding formats and aspect ratios.

PAL can come in a couple of flavours... if you are outputting this for computer screen or TV you'll probably have different requirements.

PAL D1/DV
720*576 Pixels
1.07 Pixel Aspect Ratio
4:3 Image Aspect Ratio

Notice that the Pixel aspect ratio is not 1. This is because the pixels are not actually square! They are, in the case of a TV stretched slightly wider when they are displayed. This is why, on your computer screen (with square pixels) the output may look stretched vertically. Sometimes software will compensate for this and adjust when displaying, but not always.

If you want to display this on computer screen, and have the option to output it for PAL D1/DV TV Broadcast you can actually work in square pixels and adjust your output later if needed.

PAL D1/DV Square Pixels
768*576
1.0 Pixel Aspect Ratio
4:3 Image Aspect Ratio

The complication doesn't end there...

You should probably read up some detailed information, for dealing with widescreen display, anamorphic etc...

Oh, I forgot to note... that you should also correctly interpret the footage as it comes into your software as well. Programs usually make a best guess, but you can't always rely on that.

It depends on the source, it's a long and bmpy road I'm afraid... perhaps you can describe fully what your source footage is and what you are outputting for?

Thanks motionreactor.

The video im importing is PAL DV widescreen 1.4568

In AF i simply go to my compression settings and select DV-PAL and 16:9

But when i render this output and re-open in vegas. ( and select match output ratio... so it goes back to 16:9... it seems vertically off.. in that its a bit streched)

i am just outputting , so i can go back to vegas with it, and continue editing.... but of course want it the same pixels
