playing back ANY audio file in vista reduces your maximum network bandwidth to 15 percent of it's max. speculation is that this is because there is "audio watcher" as part of the DRM built into Vista which is analysing every single audio file you play in case you are doing anything naughty.

if they have a similar hidden system in place for video (eg to stop people copying HD-DVD titles) then it may well be impossible for VJ apps to ever get as good performance on Vista as they do on XP.

vista is broken by design, stick to XPsp2 or switch to mac os x or linux

Yes, I'm afraid that is the case. I heard from a colleague of my bf who was doing a speech at a big computer conference that all the guys talking about vista, and in front of the audiences telling them about advantages and good things, were saying totally different things backstage. Everyone hates vista, even those who has to promote it. It's crazy that vista has been out now for 7 months and they still haven't gotten it to work yet. It's slow as hell and full of stupidities and bugs.

Default 1 more question

Great answers - thanks for the QT Alternative.

I'll piss them off in the shop then by telling them that I'll only buy it with XP.

1 last question - forgive my ignorence over this - How much GB Ram do you think XP can pick up.

I was going to stick 2x 2GB sticks in total 4GB - cos memory is cheap as chips these days.

Would XP 32bit be able to use all or most of this?

Yes it will. Windows XP page files (which mirror your ram) store up to 4028mb.

Actually that depends on your BIOS. Many BIOS' will not allow more than 3gig of RAM in any Windows install, so check that before you buy.

Vista is dreadfull, and sadly I hve to run it at work from this week onwards. I am not happy.

The only problem with quicktime alternative is I've had a few problems in editing problems as no official quicktime is installed.

What codec are people using for editing, I can't get after effects to import uncompressed avi's at present which is a real pian, so have had to go back to tiff image sequences. I have ACE codec pack installed and new version seems to work ok under vista. Playback isn't so much a problem but editing is still proving a real pain under vista, probably as I'm on AE 7 as new AE needs 64 bit processing and my box here only is 32 bit.

Anyone else had problems?

Default QT Alternative and ..........

I was about to download this but then Ive read so many reviews about it the latest version having bloatware it put me off a bit.

I cant use QT 7 cos it just fucks with my editing applications.

Trouble is this means I cant use my Video Ipod with new Itunes as it needs QT 7 downloaded with the whole Itunes package....

How on earth are you guys getting around this as I dont know any VJs using QT 7 but I bet loads of you are using Video Ipods.... U havent got a dedicated PC just for this surely?

My Video Ipod is just sitting here wasted....

turkish the only solution is two windows partitions...

one is for live vj'ing with quicktime alternative and a minimal stripped back windows install.

the other is the normal windows install with everything for making content, editing apps, internet etc.
