tungsten par cans give off a lot of heat and also infrared light, screwing up the tracking of the kinect on the stage of a theatre, apart from switching all the tungsten lights with led versions, is there a fix? i know the kinect uses a narrow band of the ir end of the em spectrum, so it can be used in daylight...

You can put NIR cut filters in front of your lighting fixtures, but you need to know the kinect wavelength. The thing is the kinect emits a pattern of near infrared light and if your lighting washes out that pattern, your kinect NIR camera is blind. By putting the proper filters in front of your light fixtures, you will prevent them from interfering with the pattern and from showing in your Kinect camera - basically it should see again.
According to "Hacking the Kinect" By Jeff Kramer, Matt Parker and Nicolas Burrus, the wavelenght you want to cut is 830 nm. check here (thanks google !) : http://books.google.ca/books?id=Iftk...length&f=false According to "Research and Education in Robotics - EUROBOT 2011: International Conference" the wavelenght would be 950 nm. See here : http://books.google.ca/books?id=7ivc...length&f=false That's like 5 minutes of googling - I'll let you go from here ![]() Then acquire samples, do a test and if it works buy enough to cover all the lighting devices used while the kinect is in action. And come back to tell us the story

cheers Luc, what google terms did you use? i was searching "tungsten kinect" but coming up with sweet fa. that's awesome work tho, anyone think it possible to put the filter on the kinect rather than all the lights? this particular job has finished but i will be looking into it in the future so will definitely be reporting back...

Sun light kills the kinect too, I've been working in a black out room for the past 10 days because of that!
You won't be able to filter the kinect, you have to treat all the other lighting, LEDs is definatly the easiest way... |

there was led about but we didn't have time/lampy couldn't be arsed to swap it all out.
so the whole idea of kinect of getting people out of their chairs and being more active/social, falls down cos they've got to play in the dark? |

the whole idea of video games being an active acitivity or social in any way is ridiculous.
Climb a tree, it's more fun.
