Sounds interesting but the submission is being charged for (50€ for online, 80€ postal), I´m usually reluctant to pay entry fees.
http://www.celesteprize.com/pdf/term...ze_2009_EN.pdf How´s everybody else here feeling toward this? |

There was no critique implied in my post at all, I can perfectly well imagine how difficult it is to set up such an ambitious competition, especially on the financial side.
You will require quite some submissions to make it happen and I do deeply respect the efforts you take. So I do wish you find some sponsors to make things easier for you. Your festival is by far not the only one that charges for submissions (it´s rather frequently encounterd with videofestivals) and thus I´m still curious to know how other forum members think about this issue... take care, a. |

Celeste Prize is organised by a non-profit cultural association in Italy, which has no sponsors and is entirely dependent on the goodwill and subscriptions made by artists. In return Celeste Prize distributes awards, organises a number of events, publishes catalogues, maintains an important website for artists and arts-related professionals.
Following the success of national prizes organised in Italy, the UK and Germany since 2004, we have finally been able to satisfy the many public requests to launch the first international Celeste Prize. Celeste Prize 2009 awards 40,000 euro in 5 categories: Live Media, Video & Animation, Installation & Sculpture, Photography & Digital graphics, and Painting. To enter Celeste Prize 2009 with a 50 euro subscription fee you: - vote the prize money if you are a finalist - have a chance to win financial awards and exhibit at the final in Berlin - have a chance to exhibit at other special events - have a personal, unlimited online space in CStudios - will be seen by gallerists, curators, critics, collectors, and public arts administrators worldwide - have a personalised internet address to use and link in the web - have the chance to be included in Celeste Prize catalogues If you submit your work to the prize, it will be seen by an important, international panel of art critics and curators visit this page to see them http://www.celesteprize.com/selectors/ Don't hesitate to let us know what you think, and any ideas or suggestions you may have about the prize. We look forward to hearing from you soon, thanks Steven Music - Founder Roberto Baldi - Project Manager http://www.celesteprize.com |

I would like to invite you to join the first Celeste Live Media Prize, which awards 8,000 € to the winning live media set. Finalist sets will be performed in Berlin, Germany in September 2009.
Entries by 30 june 2009 http://www.celesteprize.com To read prize terms and conditions in various languages http://celesteprize.com/prize/ The Live Media Prize is part of the 2009 Celeste Prize, an international contemporary arts prize in which artists decide who wins the 40,000 € prize money! LIVE MEDIA PRIZE 8,000 € VIDEO & ANIMATION PRIZE 8,000 € INSTALLATION & SCULPTURE PRIZE 8,000 € PAINTING PRIZE 8,000 € PHOTOGRAPHY & DIGITAL GRAPHICS PRIZE 8,000 € The 6 finalists and the 15 shortlisted artists in the Live Media Prize category, are selected by: - Claudio Sinatti, artist, Milan, Italy. - Justine Beaujouan, co-curator & organiser of Mapping Festival, Geneva, Switzerland. - Boris Edelstein & Ilan Katin, artists and developers of Modul8 software, Berlin, Germany. - Lillevan, artist, Berlin, Germany. - Bart van der Ploeg & Edwin de Koning, creators of Resolume software, The Hague, The Netherlands. - Marius Watz, artist and curator, New York, USA. Statement by Claudio Sinatti, selector for Live Media: “The presence of a Live Media prize within Celeste Prize is an excellent opportunity for artists to share experiences and experiment. It is a chance for artists working working in audiovisual creation to meet, but more importantly the first international opportunity to present works outside specialist audiovisual events in an international context of visual contemporary arts. There is much stimulating research and creation happening in live media, including contamination with other media, which can result in new creative viewpoints being established. I hope that projects presented to Celeste Prize’s Live Media section will take these factors into consideration, with resulting works being more open minded as far as the viewing public is concerned, and not the result of creation for narrow, sectorial interests alone. I hope Celeste Prize will stimulate all artists to produce highly personalised works which tell a story or raise emotions. For these reasons, it is with great pleasure that I am participating in the selection of Live Media works for Celeste Prize 2009, alongside other individuals whoose work I admire and who are contributing so much to make Live Media a recognised art form.” |

This tone of this thread certainly put me off entering, whatever the reasons, I find the way responses and questions have been handled by celeste prize really have been very unprofessional, in fact I lost complete confidence in ever entering following the tone of the responses and the way people concerns have been handled.
There are a vast number of motion graphics or filmaking competitions that are free, provide more regnition and answer questions in a helpful way. This is what was the final straw for me. Quote:

People have to click about the prize then scroll down and find a T&C's link, its very easy to miss. It was not obvious, it was hidden, add to that the fact the majority of people viewing a website dont read the T&C's when first filling out a form to enter, is it suprising that people were going to be annoyed? When companies only put stuff in the T&C's then people will always feel your just trying to hide it, everyone knows it, dont hide stuff in the T&C's. People are happy to pay if they want to enter, they would have to pay anyway if they even wanted to enter. But people do not want to have the entrance fee hidden, I dont want to have to search through T&C's to find what I dont know or have missed. Your responses are rude, and obtuse, your expecting people to pay to enter, pay to travel to the event, be subjected to spam adverts, be taxed in a country that is neither the entrants country nor the place where the prize is presented. All for a prize that has currently no eposure, has no track record, and is one of a thousand media awards or prizes many of which do not charge and have enormous publicity. All in all a terrible way to run a competition, please in future do not insult the artists that are being asked to fund the prize money. |

I was not asking you to correct me, I simply get no impression of regret from yourselves that things have turned sour. That artists may have been put off entirely by your handling of questions here. Or that people obviously are annoyed that stuff was hidden in T&C's. Just take this on board.... I won't be entering next year or any year entirely because of the way you have people handled questions. I do not want to enter a competition where I think the organisers are rude, its as simple as that. Last edited by evomedia; 21st July 2009 at 11:59 AM. |
