Default mpg2 editing-why do I get gigantic output files?

I cannot figure it out, original clip (song)- 115mb 720X480X32 0,9081 NTSC DV, I edit it to 4:3 and get:
QT PhotoJpeg comes 782 MB,
mpg2 294 MB,
am I missing something. I want to cut those wide originals to 4:3 to play from DVD or HD player into KrossFour . Then few popular hit songs I would like to have in mov format too but not in literaly Giga sizes.
I am using Sony Vegas for this editing, MainConcept mpeg2, is it because the MainConcept is not good, would other encoder make it more compact, I want at least the same or similar size as the original. Really got stuck with it since few hours, have no clue what I am doing wrong.

What quaity level was the pjpeg set at? Seems reasonable though, pjpeg is used because of the low cpu overheads rather than the small file size.

Thanks that makes sense,as far as mov but what about the difference between original mpg and the edited mpg?
I continue working as it is, will burn those mpgs to DVD, turn the shortcoming into virtue, smaller content on DVDs easier to find content live, yet I would like to know why, maybe I have some useless setting in export mpg that blows the size as compared to original. The original quality is fine, there must be some extra data put in I suppose.

Pjpeg isn't bigger than DV though.

Just don`t repack it, edit it with a software that can cut MPEG2 directly:

http://www.cuttermaran.de/

Otherwise try noise reduction.

PAL 720x576 Pjpeg 80%
Perhaps there is something in the mpg2 export setting that is unnecessary high, higher then original. Original is NTSC and it would be faster to keep it like that since it is for DVD anyway but I though better convert it to PAL just in case I might use it some other way.

You'll probably find the origional mpg was not 30fps, and probably uses a different audio compression pack.
