Projecting on scrim

I am after any help or some info on projector/material requirements for projecting on a scrim material.

The concept is to have a scrim screen minimum ~3x2m (around 9x6 ft) infront of us on a stage and project images onto this. It will probably be a theatre scrim (sharktooth or something similar) which will be transparent when lit up from behind, and pretty solid when lit up from the front.

I am starting from scratch and after some help on gear. How many lumens will this thing need to pump for the set up to work at this size? We play in bars/clubs around Melbourne so background light will vary but will generally be very dark. However, we're projecting on a thin fabric so I'd expect a lot of the light will bleed through and output will be less than usual. My budget for the projector is around 1500-2000, was looking at Benq W1080ST for the short throw capabilities (different venues have different layouts), outputs around 2000 lumens - any thoughts on this? Any recommendations on alternatives are appreciated!

Anyone have experience with scrim materials? I've read on the internet people use mosquito net and other materials as a cheap alternative to scrim. If nobody can help with this I can play around with a few materials once I get the projector.

Thank you! If you live in Melbourne hit me up and I'll be happy to put you on the door for shows :)

Hello, artists!

I'm a VJ in need, drowning in research, and hoping someone out there can bring me some clarity.

I create live video together with live musicians, and I'm looking for a box to record my sets. It needs to have:

• Composite, s-video, or (dare I hope) VGA video input
• RCA or mini-jack stereo audio input
• A hard drive, so I don't need to plug it into a computer
• VGA or composite video output and RCA or minijack audio output, so I can monitor what I'm getting

I've been using a TriStar PVR ( http://bit.ly/143eAa2 ), which was great, but has now died. Unfortunately, the manufacturer doesn't make them any more! So I have to find… something new. And that's where I get really confused. The big possibilities are:

There are PVRs like the Hauppage ( http://bit.ly/16h5lVF ) with inputs and outputs. But they all require a computer, and I don't want to drag another computer to gigs.

There's the Black Magic Intensity, but that requires a computer, and I really don't wanna drag another computer around.

Then there are DVD recorders ( http://amzn.to/11MhoWr ). But most of them seem incapable of monitoring, which is nerve-wracking.

Next possibility is TV boxes, like the Brite View BV-980H ( http://bhpho.to/12bCu0k ). But it's hard for me to tell if I can make it record with a button-push, or if it has to have a TV program guide to record.

The most promising option seems to be CCTV DVR recording boxes. Some of them ( http://amzn.to/17nn3es ) have BNC outputs (which I could easily convert to composite) and VGA output, which is pretty appealing. But does anyone have experience with how the quality is?

There's also a few oddities. The iRecord ( http://bhpho.to/JyCyPy ), has potential but it's sketchily documented. Coby makes a portable media player with recording features ( http://bit.ly/1205bBC ) but Coby gear is always garbage. The HyperDeck shuttle ( http://bit.ly/MvtXVh )is intriguing, but would require me to do a lot of expensive converting to get my analog signals in and out.

So! As you can see, I've done a lot of research, and it's mostly left me *more* confused. If anyone has advice or experience to share, I'd love to hear it. Thanks!

i have both the video and audio all done already with all 8 discrete audio channels but it needs to keep the wav as full wav uncompressed and unmixed
its very important that the wav files remain pure as only the last 2 chanels are actual music audio the first 5 channels are laser control signals (x,y,rgb)
and it works perfect as a 7.1 wav now im trying to sync the video portion of the laser show to the lasers

any help would be great

My very first post here so hi all! Been reading forums for last few days, a lot of useful info here, but as a complete noob in VJ I hope you can get me going in the right direction.

I'm in a 3 piece trip hop/electronic/chillout band and we figure that might be best if I actually drop all the instruments and move on to VJ role to spice up our shows a bit. Our setup is quite simple as we pretty much have a singer, keyboard guy (he runs reason on his PC) and me, the soon to be the VJ. The question is where to start?

1. What do I need to get things going? I already got a demo of the latest resolution, laptop (Thinkpad T400, 8Gb ram), two rather standard projectors (NEC NP100), dSLR. I understand that there is a learning curve but I have at least 6 months to learn this stuff. Like with everything there are dos and don'ts, I would prefer not to get bad habits :) So the most basic things you can think of.

2. Mac vs PC? Which one is better? I currently have a Windows laptop but can upgrade to Mac if it's really better or easier to use or has better software.

3. How do I sync with reason that's on another laptop (windows)? I want to have images sync'd with music with some of the stuff pre-programmed and the rest controlled live.

Thanks

From July 2th until the July 5th, approximate 17 Vj's will be heading towards Rome for a "Bootcamp". While we are there we would like to Vj there as well however we don't know anybody there!!!

What we would like to do is to Vj there for free (the vj students need to show what they learned) and in return we would like to get free acces to the club (+ possible drinks).

Can anybody hook us up? Very Much appreciated!

Hi there,

using resolume arena, macbook pro i7 15' mid 2010 (Nvidia Gt300), playing through a TH2G DP edition a 3072x768 project.

i'm trying to nail the Alpha export with DVX,
files are exported from C4D, export show DVX+alpha in quicktime settings but aren't passing the transparency. Files exported as animation+alpha work just fine.

does anyone knows of a potential pitfall in this workflow?
i have looked at the manual section and it's all fairly basic

is there a test loop i could download that has DVX with alpha that i could test on my system?
the "orange string" demo loop at the bottom of Resolume DVX page also seems to indicate it has alpha (millions+ in quicktime) but doesn't show transparency either.

please note that the layer my media is on is directed to an individual mapping slice rather than being a composition overlay. regardless, the animation+ alpha works in this same layer.

do i need to export via AE/compressor?

thanks in advance for the assistance.

Hi all so I got the new MBPr and am messing about with Resolume.

I'm very stuck in my ways with M8 with building 2 channels of 3/4 layers and using a manual or auto A/B bus mix. I will probably do some thing very similar with Resolume.

I already have an APC40 and a Korg nano control and these work very well with M8 & this style of mixing, and they should work relatively well with Res (I am yet to see) however I'm after a new controller that sits somewhere between the 2 size and functions wise.

I'm currently looking at the ALLEN & HEATH XONE K2 https://www.storedj.com.au/products/ALE-XONEK2 as it seems to have what I need (min 4 faders, 8 knobs, 20 buttons) it also has replaceable faders which is great when the one I use to Xfade wears out. The K2 build quality is great & it has a built in sound card for those annoying AV intros ;) Also it has scenes/layers like the nano control that has 4 diff scenes. Only thing holding me back is no horizontal Xfade and the vertical style of the controller.

Anyone else have any ideas for controllers.

Currently I use the Nano kontrol with the following setup in M8.
Faders for Xfade, master alpha, master speed, active opacity. Knobs for active speed, strobe speed, audio in level, BPM speed, FX parameters (4 knobs). Buttons are 8 layer selects, active layer mute, speed reset, white flash, strobe activate, FX on/off (4 buttons), BPM on/off, Tap, Sync. I do all clip triggering with the keyboard when using the nano.

it phsycally started sixteen days ago at a small park (gezi park) in the middle of taksim. mentally the atmosphere was here (to stay) hence the governing party has some ``mad projects`` like opening a second canal above bosphorus between black sea and marmara sea to improve sea traffic and to build a second istanbul around it. this little park was part of this social engineering projects and the plan was to demolish the park in order to raise the building which was previously there and demolished in 1930`s and open it as a shopping mall.

there was a little collective which were alarmed and watching for the progress. and they were at the spot when the demoliton started which they stop becouse of some law matters. and spontaneously started gezi watch a little like occupy movements but not much. people started to sleep at the park waiting for the buldozers. i joined the park watch quiete accidentally this was the day police make the first attack with large amount of tear gas, terrorizing the space etc.

on the second day which police attacked gezi park again and again at the hour 05am. and after police attack to the press meeting which was taking place at the taksim square where people were only sitting brought more people to taksim people tried to stick together in istiklal street which is a big pedestrian street formed of 19th-18th century istanbul architecture (which is also under attack of demolition) state brought massive gigantic use of tear gas, water cannons and rubber bullets trying to get rid of people this went on for about 7 hours. at 7 pm a large crowd gathered together near gezi park (which is now under police occupation) due to a call from the collective to make a press statement. at this point people started to shout for resignation of the goverment police attacked again before the press statement and this started a street war in two points one istiklal street and one at the some critical point between taksim and sisli where. at both points there were tens of thousands of people standing still behind a small group throwing rocks to police who were throwing tear gas both from ground and police helicopter. at this point people started to make barricades and deliver anti-acid solutions which is essential. (if you are at a situation where you have to face tear gas you can make cure for it by mixing anti acid stomach solutions with water in the amount of 1-3 -i couldn't find the slash-) media collapsed showing nothing on the subject and this started protests in neighbourhoods hitting frying pans making sound with everything they can find like car horns referee whistles. an the riot started to evolve to other cities (almost all of them)

about ten thousand people were taken under custody by police, there are about five thousand injured about a hundred of this people are seriously injured like lost eyes(due to the information given by turkish doctors assosiciaton), and there are 4 deaths; one police falling from a construction site and three protesters being hit with tear gas bullets, two are in the coma. and almost every istanbullian breathing two different type of tear gas in past 16 days.

there is a pm erdogan (erdogone) fact which i really don't want to talk about now.

but still we feel quite good.

buut also stressed. oczimorone?

i guess that's all for now. i usually don't hope but i hope this is not off topic. i don't have a internet connection so i may or may not reply if you say anything.

turkish main tags for internet are direngezi direnistanbul direnankara direnizmir there are more only english source as far as i know is whatshappeninginistanbul (com or org i didn't have much time to look at internet

cheers and greetings from istanbul
