I've managed to get my hands on a JVC BR-S610E VHS deck it looks like I may be able to 'borrow' it on a long term loan ;) but I may have to pay for it.

So before I lay out my hard earned cash I was wondering if any of you lot know anything about it? I was hoping it will give me real time smooth scratching of VHS video. Am I being optomistic here? All my skills are in new school DV and computer related stuff, so I don't really know much about professional VHS/SVHS equipment.

Thanks

Dave

The closest thing you'll get to scratching with tape is systems that incorporate "dynamic tracking". These allow the tape head to cleanly jog and shuttle without losing sync. So, if you get a peep at it, just go ahead and try it and see if it works. I think only the newer Betacam decks and Digibeta decks really allow you much speed, however. Typically, the sync starts to break up above 2x speed... which isn't very usefull. See what you think, but I never found it very satisfying on any of the Svhs decks.
However, I highly recommend having an S-deck instead of a standard VHS, just to have SVideo ins and outs, and S-format for recording mixes. Couldn't find much info on the JVC deck, but if it has a built in TBC, the could be very useful for giving macrovision the smackdown.

we got a JVC BR-S611E dunno what the diffrence is, but ours is svhs maybe thats it
no it wont let you scratch with tape (it has got a jog shuttle but you get lines up and down the picture when fwd/rwnd)
they are damn fine solid pro decks tho with heavy duty transport etc. but forget about gigging with it they,re huge and weigh a ton
