I was involved in organising accommodation at Avit 2003, and although I dont wish to cover that particular base this year
it would be good to know of any reasonably priced accommodation near the venue.

Hey Jo

Myself and Mr Myogenic are on the case with that at the minute- hopefully we will be able to secure some good discounts on accommodation. We'd like to try to accommodate those attending and participating in the festival together, because it was such a nice part of the 2003 event.

I should have some news early next week :)

:) Yes I heard that everyone enjoyed staying in the flats I found, why was I so stupid to not stay there and travel in from London every day :o lets hope that this years accommodation is just as good.

any hints will be helpful, as hotels start from 50 pounds a night and even B&B seems to cost 30 the least... quite a lot if one wants to stay a week. is the hotel in the custard factory already available?

Hello Everyone

Well we haven't been able to negotiate a deal with a specific hotel after all because we'll not be making a group booking.

But rooms can be booked direct through Donna Dowling at Birmingham Convention Bureau.

She has a huge database of accommodation of all kinds and prices and will match you up with accommodation that meets your criteria. Please tell her when you call that you're attending AVITUK05.

Here's her direct line:
+44 (0)121 202 5139

Obviously twin and double rooms will be better value than singles. Please feel free to use this thread for discussions on room sharing, or to get in touch with your friends.

If that's not working out for you then contact me on: info@avit.org.uk and I'll do my very best to sort you out.

I'm sorry we couldn't secure a better deal.

Yeah, the 'commission of accommodational affairs' at avit03 did a great job! It made me feel very welcome!

This year I'm thinking about trying to find a room in something like a student house. Last year at Avit I spent most of my money on outdoor meals in restaurants. I think staying in a simple room with the possibility of making your own food will reduce living costs a lot.

I studied in Liverpool last year and I know that it was very easy to rent a room in a (student) house for a few days. But obviously in Liverpool a lot of rooms are empty, so it's easy to contact a landlord and make an agreement, but does anybody know what the housing situation is like in Birmingham? It's a big city, so i suppose there are lots of students looking for a room... at least that's the situation in big cities in Holland....

hopefully someone will find these links usefull - there seem to be a few service appartments that are rented to people attending confrences and the like - they aren't that cheap but if you are a group or are willing to share then it gets much better.

good luck.

Custard Factory
Gibb Street
Digbeth
Birmingham
B9 4AA

but speak to Donna, as she will have the best knowledge.. once you are outside walking distance then it makes very little odds where you are staying, as the bus/train service is actually good in birmingham (in general)..

Hello

That's a good idea about renting a room, expecially for a week.

Here's a link to a flatshare website that I used to find my place in London. It has a Birmingham site too:

Also just to let you know that we've negotiated a 10% discount on food at the main restaurant at the Custard Factory, so meals should be much cheaper at this year's event than Brighton.

There are also lots and lots of really good Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi restaurants that serve amazing food at very good prices. A list will be included in this year's programme.

Hello,
Im looking into lodging for the week of avit, starting monday the 25th of April til Sunday May 1st.
Like all of you I am sure, Im trying to keep accomodation costs down. Anyone interested in sharing a hotel room? Im thinking along the lines of 4 people getting a double hotel room in Birmingham.

If you are interested, but for a shorter time period please respond anyways, I could see a room starting with a few people..and expanding....

I know one other person that is interested in roomsharing only on the last weekend.

If your interested just post here, and if theres some feedback then I'll give Donna (mentioned above) a call and try to find something. Please post soon if interested, cause its time to get this sorted!

hey one & all

i have applied for a local fund to help & pay my visit to Avit
& , yesterday after long waiting & nails eating i was lucky
& was confirm to receive half of the sum i needed
(almost covers my flight need mo 100 pounds)

now i need to book flight ASAP, its holidays here & flights are so full

anyway, cutting down costs means i can't pay for the hotel, than im having to ask those who can help finding free place to crash at, for a girl :o for avit

thanks a lot. pls pm or email if u have a cool idea

I found myself and a friend a spacious room in one of the student houses in Birmingham.
Check out this link:
http://www.accommodationforstudents.com/
check this one for a list of landlords
http://www.accommodationforstudents.com/landlords/landlords_Birmingham.asp

True, it's a bit of an adventure, cos you don't really know for sure what you'll get, but ...it is cheap, you can cook your own meals and you might make some friends too :)
